Is Claude Academy free? Courses and certificates

Yes. Claude Academy courses are free on Skilljar with a completion certificate. The Claude Certification Program is separate: four paid Pearson VUE exams.

Is Claude Academy free?

Yes. Claude Academy is free. The site at academy.claude.com describes itself as "Free courses, tutorials, and use cases from Anthropic's education team". You need a Skilljar account to take the courses, and the Skilljar FAQ says a completion certificate is issued when you finish a course. All of this was checked on 1 October 2026.

One thing with a similar name does cost money: the Claude Certification Program. That program is a set of exams delivered through Pearson VUE, a testing company, and every exam has a fee. People mix up the free certificate and the paid certification all the time. This guide keeps the two apart, then maps each course to the reader it suits.

Where Claude Academy lives, and why you see two names

You may find the courses under three addresses. The current home is academy.claude.com. The old address, anthropic.com/learn, now redirects there, so old bookmarks still work. The course pages run on Skilljar, a hosted training platform, and the Skilljar site still uses the older name "Anthropic Academy".

So if a link says Anthropic Academy and takes you to a Skilljar page, you are in the right place. The name changed on the main site before it changed on the course platform. Nothing about the price changed with it.

Do you need a Claude account to take the courses?

No. The courses need a Skilljar account, which is separate from your claude.ai login. Signing in to Claude does not sign you in to the courses, because the two systems keep separate accounts. You can take every course without an Anthropic account at all, and without paying for any Claude plan.

Practice is a different question. A course can teach you how Claude Code works, but running Claude Code yourself needs whatever plan or API access Claude Code requires. If you are not sure what the tool is yet, start with what Claude Code is and how it runs. The rules for signing in are covered in using Claude Code with a subscription or an API key.

The same applies to the API courses. Watching a lesson about the Claude API is free. Sending real requests to the API needs API access and the billing that comes with it. Before you budget for that, read whether the Claude API has a free tier. For the general courses, the free Claude plan is often enough to try what you learn, and the limits of the free Claude plan explains where it stops. If you need more, choosing the Claude plan you actually need compares the paid options.

Which Claude Academy course should you take?

The catalogue below uses only course names that were listed on 1 October 2026. Courses are added and renamed over time, so check the site for the current list. Pick by what you will actually do with Claude.

  • Claude 101: the starting point if you are new to Claude, or have only used it as a chat window.
  • Introduction to Claude Cowork: for people who use, or plan to use, Claude Cowork. If you are not sure whether Cowork or Claude Code fits your work, read how Claude Cowork differs from Claude Code first.
  • Claude Code 101: the first course for developers who want to use Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent.
  • Claude Code in Action: for developers who have the basics of Claude Code and want to use it on real projects.
  • Claude Platform 101: for people who will build on Anthropic's developer platform instead of using the chat app.
  • Building with the Claude API: for developers who write code that calls the Claude API.
  • Introduction to Model Context Protocol: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting an AI application to outside tools and data. Take this course when you plan to write or connect MCP servers.
  • AI Fluency for students: for students who want to use AI well in their studies. It pairs with what Claude offers students.
  • AI Fluency for educators: for teachers who want to use AI in their own work and teach with it.

A developer who wants to work in the terminal can take Claude Code 101 and then Claude Code in Action. A developer who wants to build an application can take Claude Platform 101 and then Building with the Claude API. Add Introduction to Model Context Protocol when your application needs to reach outside tools. If your real goal is to build agents, combine those courses with a learning path for AI agents in 2026, which covers the topics around the Claude-specific material.

Free completion certificate vs paid Claude certification

These two are easy to confuse because both use the word "certificate". They are separate products with separate rules.

The completion certificate comes from the free courses. The Skilljar FAQ says completion certificates are issued. It records that you finished a course. It costs nothing, and you need only your Skilljar account.

The Claude Certification Program is a paid exam program. It has 4 exams, delivered through Pearson VUE. The fees below are list prices in US dollars, before any partner discounts, as of October 2026.

The Associate exam is the cheapest, at $99. Developer–Foundations costs $125, and Architect–Foundations costs $125. The most expensive is Architect–Professional, at $175.

The bigger difference is who can register. Anthropic's partner FAQ says registration needs "a partner email address on a recognized company domain". It also says that "personal email addresses will not work". So a Gmail or Outlook address cannot register, whatever you are willing to pay. In practice, you register through a company that Anthropic recognizes as a partner.

This guide does not state exam lengths, pass marks, certificate formats or the countries where the exams are offered. Those details are not covered here, so check the official program pages before you plan around them.

Should you take the free courses or the paid exam?

If you want to learn Claude, take the free courses. They cost nothing, they need no Claude account, and you get a completion certificate for each course you finish. That certificate is a fair thing to list on a CV or a profile, as long as you describe it as course completion.

If you work at an Anthropic partner company and your employer wants a formal credential, the certification exams are the route. Ask your employer first, because the partner email rule decides whether you can register at all, and the partner discount may change what you pay.

If you are a student or an independent developer with a personal email address, the paid program is closed to you under the rules quoted above. The free courses are the full option, and they cover the same products.

FAQ

Is Claude Academy really free, or is there a paid tier?

The courses are free. Claude Academy at academy.claude.com describes itself as "Free courses, tutorials, and use cases from Anthropic's education team", and you take them with a free Skilljar account. The paid product is the separate Claude Certification Program, which is a set of exams delivered through Pearson VUE.

Do I get a certificate for finishing a Claude Academy course?

Yes. The Skilljar FAQ for the courses says completion certificates are issued. A completion certificate records that you finished a course. It is a different thing from passing one of the paid Claude Certification Program exams.

How much does the Claude certification exam cost?

As of October 2026, the list prices in US dollars, before partner discounts, are $99 for Associate, $125 for Developer–Foundations, $125 for Architect–Foundations and $175 for Architect–Professional. The exams are delivered through Pearson VUE.

Can I take the Claude certification exam with a personal email address?

No. Anthropic's partner FAQ says registration needs "a partner email address on a recognized company domain", and that "personal email addresses will not work". You register through a company that Anthropic recognizes as a partner. The free Claude Academy courses have no such rule and need only a Skilljar account.
