Claude for Startups: what you get, who qualifies
Claude for Startups has paused its $1,000 API credits and free Team year for new members. See who qualifies, what remains and what claimed perks are worth.
The short answer: who qualifies for Claude for Startups
Claude for Startups is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups. Anthropic announced the expanded programme on 6 October 2026. That announcement says companies founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2 can apply. As of 12 October 2026, new members get up to $45,000 in partner offers through the Claude Startup Stack, Applied AI office hours and events. The $1,000 in Claude API credits and the free year of Claude Team arrived with the expansion, and both are now suspended. The programme page says Anthropic is "currently over capacity on the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers".
If you already claimed the credits or the Team year, the page says nothing changes. For those members, the catch is time. On 7 October 2026 the programme page said the credits expire six months after they are granted. The Team year was only for organisations that are new to Team. The rest of this guide does the arithmetic that the programme page leaves out.
What the programme gives you, as of October 2026
These facts come from the official Claude for Startups page, read on 12 October 2026.
- Up to $45,000 in partner offers through the Claude Startup Stack. The page says independent third-party companies offer these, not Anthropic. Each partner sets its own terms, and the list changes over time. Read the current offers on the programme page before you plan around one.
- Applied AI office hours and events. Members can book 45-minute virtual sessions with Anthropic's Applied AI team, held every other week. Startup events, hackathons and meetups are also part of the programme.
- Higher API rate limits. The page says members who receive credits through the programme get them automatically. There is no separate request. The $1,000 credit is suspended, so a new member who receives no programme credits should not count on the higher tier.
- Up to $100,000 in extra API credits through partner VCs. If your investor is in Anthropic's VC partner network, you may qualify. You claim these through the VC, not through the programme application.
- Suspended: $1,000 in Claude API credits and a free year of Claude Team. The Team offer covered up to five Premium seats. The programme FAQ says Anthropic is over capacity on both offers. It is reshaping the programme and will re-review all applications, which may change the status of some of them. Offers that members already claimed are not affected.
Claimed credits work only on the first-party Claude API, through the Claude Console. They do not work on third-party platforms such as AWS Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Higher rate limits matter once your app starts to receive HTTP 429 errors under load. Reading the Claude API rate limit headers shows how close each request is to the limit. That tells you whether the higher tier actually changed anything for you.
Who qualifies, and how to apply
The rule has two dates, and you only need to meet one of them. Anthropic's 6 October 2026 announcement says that startups "founded in the last five years or funded in the last two are eligible to apply." A company founded in the last 5 years qualifies. A company that raised money in the last 2 years also qualifies, even if it is older. A company that is older than 5 years and has not raised money in the last 2 years does not qualify. As of 12 October 2026, the programme page itself no longer prints the two dates, and Anthropic says it is reshaping the programme. Check the page before you rely on the rule.
To apply, sign in to the Claude Console and fill out the application. You need a Console account. The page says applications are reviewed within one week. On 7 October 2026 the application also asked for a company email address that matches your website's domain. An address at a free webmail provider does not match your website. The page no longer describes that check, but you should still have an address on your own domain ready.
Many third-party guides still describe older rules. Some say you need backing from an institutional investor. Others still list the $1,000 credit and the free Team year as open offers. As of 12 October 2026, the official page says neither. It names bootstrapped and pre-seed startups as eligible, and it says both offers are over capacity. When a guide disagrees with the programme page, trust the programme page.
What $1,000 in Claude API credits buys
This section is for members who already claimed the credits, or for anyone waiting in case Anthropic reopens the offer. API pricing is per million tokens (MTok). There is one price for input and a higher price for output. The cost of any workload follows one formula: cost = (input MTok × input price) + (output MTok × output price). Use it with the published prices, not with a price you remember.

"input_usd_per_mtok": 10,
"output_usd_per_mtok": 50

]On every model, output costs five times as much as input. For example, Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Because of that ratio, the split between input and output tokens decides your bill more than the total token count does. As of 12 October 2026, the pricing page lists Haiku 4.5 as a legacy model. Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, so a credit goes much further on it.
Take a mix of 3 input tokens for every 1 output token. This is an assumption for the example, not a measurement. It is close to a chat app with a long system prompt and short answers. On Sonnet 5.5, one block of 3 MTok input plus 1 MTok output costs (3 × 2) + (1 × 10) = $16. Divide $1,000 by $16 and you get 62.5 blocks. That is 250 million tokens in total.

]At that mix, the same $1,000 buys 500 million tokens on Haiku 4.5, and only 50 million on Fable 5.1. To see how much text one million tokens holds, read what 1M tokens of Claude costs and holds. These figures use list prices only. Prompt caching and batch processing lower the real cost, so the chart shows the smallest amount the credits buy.
Why the six-month expiry matters more than the $1,000
Credits you do not spend before they expire are gone. On 7 October 2026 the programme page said the credits expire six months after they are granted. The page no longer prints an expiry, so read the expiry date shown on your grant in the Claude Console. With a six-month expiry, you need to spend about $167 a month, every month, from the day of the grant to use all $1,000. At the Sonnet 5.5 mix above, that is about 42 million tokens a month.
Most products in early development use far less than that. A team that runs a few hundred test requests a day may spend $20 a month, which means most of the grant expires unused. The headline figure is $1,000. The amount you actually use is your real monthly spend times six, up to $1,000.
If the offer reopens, the timing of the application matters. Apply when you have real traffic, or a planned load test or evaluation run that will use the credits. You stay eligible for 5 years after founding, so waiting a few months usually costs nothing. The exception is a company close to its fifth year with no recent funding. It should apply before it is too old to qualify. Write down the grant date when the credits arrive, and put the expiry date in your calendar.
What the free Team year is worth, and what month 13 costs
Claude Team is the shared workspace plan for teams of 2 to 150 people. It has Standard seats and Premium seats. The programme offer covered up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team. As of 12 October 2026, that offer is suspended for anyone who has not already claimed it.

]At list price, five Premium seats cost $6,000 a year on annual billing, or $7,500 if you pay month by month. That is what the free year is worth, but only if you would have bought five Premium seats anyway. Suppose three of your five people only need chat. Then the real value is closer to two Premium seats and three Standard seats.
In month 13 you start to pay. Five Premium seats on monthly billing cost $625 a month. The programme page does not describe what happens at the end of the free year. Plan as if the seats start to bill at list price unless you change them. In month 11, decide which people really use a Premium seat. Five Standard seats on monthly billing cost $125 a month, so moving light users to Standard is the largest saving you have. To decide seat by seat, compare a Team Premium seat against a personal Max plan. Before the renewal, read how Claude Team plans work for a small business.
The Team seats and the API credits are separate products with separate bills. Seats do not use up the credits, and the credits do not pay for seats.
Who does not qualify, and what they can use instead
While the credit and Team offers are suspended, no new member can get those two perks. The groups below do not qualify for the programme, or would not have gained from them:
- A company older than 5 years that has not raised money in the last 2 years.
- A solo developer with no company domain to apply from, if the application still asks for one. It did on 7 October 2026.
- An organisation that already has a Team workspace. It did not qualify for the free Team year.
- A team that sends all of its Claude traffic through AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Programme credits do not apply there.
If you pay for a Max or Team plan, the programme FAQ notes that the plan's monthly API credits are still available in the Console. Monthly API credits on Max and Team explains how to claim them.
Two other Anthropic programmes cover groups that the startup programme does not. Students have their own options, listed in Claude for students. Open-source maintainers can apply to Claude for Open Source. As of 12 October 2026, it offers six months of Claude Max 20x at no cost. Its programme page lists who qualifies. Examples include 200,000 or more monthly downloads, 500 or more dependent repositories, or core work on a major project such as CPython or the Linux kernel. It is a subscription plan, not API credit. It pays for chat and Claude Code use, not for an app that calls the API.
FAQ
Does a bootstrapped startup qualify for Claude for Startups?
Yes. As of 12 October 2026, the programme page says it is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups. Anthropic's 6 October 2026 announcement says the deciding factor is a date: the company must have been founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2. You apply through the Claude Console. New members currently get the partner offers, office hours and events, but not the $1,000 credit or the free Team year, which are suspended.
Can I use Claude for Startups credits on AWS Bedrock or Vertex AI?
No. Programme credits apply only to the first-party Claude API, billed through the Claude Console. You cannot use them on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or any other third-party platform. If your production traffic runs through a cloud marketplace, the credits only cover traffic you send to the Claude API directly.
How long do Claude for Startups API credits last?
On 7 October 2026 the programme page said they expire six months after they are granted. The page no longer prints an expiry, so check the date shown on your grant in the Claude Console. With a six-month expiry, you need to spend about $167 a month from the grant date to use the full $1,000. As of 12 October 2026, new $1,000 grants are suspended. Members who already claimed theirs keep them.
What happens when the free year of Claude Team ends?
The free year covered up to five Premium seats for organisations that were new to Team. It is now suspended for anyone who has not already claimed it. After a claimed year ends, plan to pay list price. As of 12 October 2026, a Premium seat costs $125 a month on monthly billing or $100 a month on annual billing. Your largest saving is to move light users to Standard seats, which cost $25 a month on monthly billing.
