Claude Team Premium vs Max: Which to Buy

Team Premium seats and Claude Max cost the same per person on annual billing. What differs is who controls the seat and which terms cover your data.

Team Premium seat vs Max: the short answer

A Claude Team Premium seat and a Claude Max 5x subscription cost the same per person on annual billing: $100 a month, as of 5 October 2026. Both include Claude Code. Buy Max if you work alone, or if each person pays for their own tools. Buy Team Premium seats when a business needs to own the accounts, pay one bill and keep client code under commercial data terms.

The rest of this guide explains the usage multipliers and the parts of the decision that are not price. Then it works out the cost for teams of one to five people.

What each plan costs as of October 2026

All prices below come from claude.com/pricing and the Claude Help Center, read on 5 October 2026. They are US dollar prices for web sign-up, before tax. Prices in the mobile app stores and in other currencies can differ.

  • Pro: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 paid up front).
  • Max 5x: $100 a month. Max 20x: $200 a month. The Help Center says Max is a monthly subscription only, so there is no annual discount.
  • Team Standard seat: $25 per seat per month billed monthly, or $20 per seat per month billed annually.
  • Team Premium seat: $125 per seat per month billed monthly, or $100 per seat per month billed annually.
  • Team size: the pricing page says "For teams of 2 to 150", and the Help Center says a Team plan needs a minimum of two members.

Several third-party sites report that the minimum used to be five seats and dropped to two in July 2026. Anthropic's own pages state the current minimum of two, but they do not give a date for the change. Treat that date as unconfirmed.

The minimum matters a lot for a solo developer. One person cannot buy a single Team seat. To use Team alone, you would pay for two seats and leave one empty.

If you already know Max is right for you and only need to pick a tier, the comparison of Claude Max at $100 and at $200 covers that choice in detail.

What do "5x Standard" and "5x Pro" actually measure?

The two multipliers look alike, but they are measured against different baselines. Mixing them up is the most common mistake in this comparison.

The Max multipliers are measured against Pro. The Help Center says Max 5x gives five times the Pro plan's per-session allowance, and Max 20x gives twenty times. Both Max tiers also have weekly limits across all models.

The Team Premium multiplier on the pricing page is measured against a Team Standard seat. The exact text is "5x more usage than standard seats". The pricing page does not compare Premium to Pro at all. A Standard seat is a different product from a Pro subscription, so do not multiply the two figures together yourself and call the result a Pro ratio.

Anthropic does publish one direct figure, in a different place. The Help Center article on the Team plan gives each seat type a per-session allowance relative to Pro. Those published figures are in the chart below.

Note the scope of these numbers. They describe the per-session allowance only, which is a separate limit from the weekly limit. Per session, a Premium seat is listed at 6.25x Pro, against 5x for Max 5x and 20x for Max 20x. Anthropic does not state Team weekly limits as a multiple of Pro. So the honest conclusion is narrow. Per session, a Premium seat has a little more room than Max 5x and much less than Max 20x. For weekly totals, no published ratio exists, and you cannot compare them on paper.

The difference between the session limit and the weekly limit is explained in how Claude usage limits and weekly caps work.

Does a Team seat include Claude Code?

Yes. The Help Center lists Claude Code access for Standard seats as well as Premium seats, and the pricing page lists "Claude Code and Claude Cowork" in the Team plan features. Max includes Claude Code on both tiers.

So Claude Code access does not separate these plans. Usage does. A Standard seat has only 1.25x the Pro per-session allowance. Agent sessions in Claude Code read files, run commands and send the results back to the model, so they use far more tokens than chat. Why Claude Code uses tokens faster than chat shows where those tokens go. For a developer who runs Claude Code for most of the day, the real choice is Premium against Max, not Standard against Max.

What does Team give you that Max does not?

The price per person can be equal, so the deciding factors are about control. Each one below is a business need. If none of them applies to you, Max is simpler.

Central billing and one admin console

A Team plan has one bill and one owner. The pricing page lists central billing and administration, plus single sign-on (SSO). SSO means people sign in through your company identity provider instead of a separate Claude password.

With Max, every person has a personal account paid with a personal card. The business then has to collect a receipt from each person every month. For a shop of five, that is five receipts and five renewal dates to track.

Reassigning a seat when someone leaves

This is where the two models differ most. A Max subscription belongs to the person who bought it. When that person leaves, the account leaves with them, together with its chat history and projects. You cannot move it to the next hire.

A Team seat belongs to the organisation. The Help Center describes the rules. When you remove a member, you do not get an immediate credit or refund. The seat stays in your plan, and you can assign it to another person. To lower the bill, you reduce the total number of seats in the plan.

There is also an unassigned option. It takes a user off a seat without removing them from the organisation. Use it to swap people between Standard and Premium within the seats you already pay for. Adding a member or upgrading a seat is charged immediately, prorated for the rest of the billing cycle.

In practice, a contractor who works with you for three months can get a Premium seat. On their last day, an admin moves that seat to someone else. Nobody has to cancel a card.

Which terms govern training on your data

Free, Pro and Max are consumer plans, governed by Anthropic's Consumer Terms. Since 28 September 2025, those terms let Anthropic use chats and coding sessions to train models, unless the user turns that setting off in their privacy settings. With the setting on, data is kept for up to five years. With the setting off, the 30-day retention period applies. One detail is easy to miss: even with the setting off, feedback you submit and conversations flagged for safety review can still be used.

Team is a commercial plan, governed by Anthropic's Commercial Terms. The pricing page states "No model training on your content by default" for Team. The consumer training setting does not apply to the Claude for Work plans.

For a shop, the difference is who decides. On Max, the training setting is each person's own choice, and the business cannot see or enforce it. A developer who opens a client repository in Claude Code on a personal Max account has made that choice on the client's behalf. On Team, the default comes from the contract, not from each person's settings page.

If your clients ask for controls beyond what Team offers, the comparison of Claude Team and Enterprise covers what changes at the next tier.

Worked examples for one, two and five people

The chart below prices common setups at the October 2026 list prices. Max has no annual option, so its annual column repeats the monthly price. The last column is the cost of one year on the cheapest billing each option allows.

One person

A solo developer cannot buy Team with one seat. Max 5x costs $100 a month, and Max 20x costs $200 a month. If you wanted Premium usage through Team, the smallest setup is one Premium seat plus one Standard seat. That costs $120 a month on annual billing, which is more than Max 5x, and the Standard seat would sit unused. For one person, Max is the answer. Pick the tier by how much you run Claude Code.

Two people

Two Max 5x subscriptions cost $200 a month, or $2,400 a year. Two Premium seats cost $250 a month on monthly billing, or $200 a month on annual billing. On annual billing the two options cost the same: $2,400 a year. So the Team features cost nothing extra if you can commit for a year. On monthly billing, Team costs more.

If only one of the two writes code all day, mix the seats. One Premium plus one Standard costs $120 a month on annual billing, $1,440 a year.

Five people

Five Max 5x subscriptions cost $500 a month. Five Premium seats cost $625 a month on monthly billing, or $500 a month on annual billing. Again the annual Team price matches Max: $6,000 a year either way.

Most five-person shops do not have five heavy users. Two developers on Premium and three colleagues on Standard costs $260 a month on annual billing, or $3,120 a year. On the individual route, those three light users would buy Pro instead of Max. Compare that mix against the Team mix, not against five Max subscriptions.

Annual Team billing is charged once a year, so set the seat count carefully before you commit. Adding seats later is prorated, but removing a member does not refund a seat. More small-business setups are covered in Claude Team plans for small businesses.

The decision rule

If a person pays for their own work, buy Max. If a business pays for the work and owns it, buy Team Premium seats on annual billing, and give Standard seats to everyone who does not code all day.

If neither description fits, for example a freelancer who sometimes needs more than Pro, start with the guide to which Claude plan you need before you spend $100 a month.

FAQ

Can I buy a single Claude Team seat for just myself?

No. As of October 2026, the Claude Help Center says a Team plan needs a minimum of two members, and the pricing page lists Team for teams of 2 to 150. A solo developer would pay for two seats and leave one empty. Max 5x at $100 a month or Max 20x at $200 a month is the simpler choice for one person, and both include Claude Code.

Is a Team Premium seat the same as Claude Max 5x?

The price is the same on annual billing: $100 per person per month as of October 2026. The usage is close but not identical. The Help Center lists a Premium seat at 6.25x the Pro per-session allowance and Max 5x at 5x, but Anthropic publishes no weekly ratio between them. The terms differ: Max is a consumer plan under the Consumer Terms, and a Premium seat is a commercial seat under the Commercial Terms.

Does Anthropic train on my code if I use Claude Code on a Max plan?

Max is a consumer plan. Since 28 September 2025, the Consumer Terms allow training on chats and coding sessions unless you turn the setting off in your privacy settings. Even with the setting off, feedback you submit and conversations flagged for safety review can still be used. Team seats fall under the Commercial Terms, and the pricing page states no model training on your content by default.

What happens to a Team seat when an employee leaves?

An admin removes the member, and the seat stays in the plan. The Help Center says removing a member does not give an immediate credit or refund, so the usual step is to assign the seat to the next person. To lower the bill, reduce the total seat count. A personal Max subscription cannot be moved like this, because it belongs to the person who bought it.
