Free Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: What You Get
Gemini Free drops to Flash-Lite on 9 October 2026. See what the free Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini plans give you on limits and privacy, and when to pay.
Free Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: the short answer
The free plans of Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini are now very different products. As of 6 October 2026, ChatGPT Free gives unlimited text chat on OpenAI's smallest current model, and it shows ads. Claude Free gives a stronger model with no ads, but a tighter cap that refills over five hours. From 9 October 2026, Gemini's free plan is limited to Flash-Lite, Google's lightest model.
This guide compares what each free plan gives a person today. It covers the model you get, how usage is counted and when it resets, the extra tools, the privacy defaults and the ads. It ends with a chooser for common jobs, and the point where paying a few dollars a month makes more sense.
How these facts were checked
Every claim below was read from the vendor's own pages and announcements on 6 October 2026. The one exception is ChatGPT, where some numbers come from OpenAI's August 2026 announcement as reported by the press, and the source is named. AI plans change often, and Gemini's 9 October change is one example. Treat every number here as true on that date, and check the linked page before you rely on it.
Which model does each free plan give you?
Claude Free gives you Sonnet, Anthropic's mid-size model, and Haiku, its faster small model. The Claude pricing page lists both for the Free plan as of 6 October 2026. Opus, the largest model, needs Pro or higher. Pro users get the same Sonnet and Haiku, so the answers you get on Free are not from a cut-down model. What you get less of is volume.
ChatGPT Free is limited to GPT-5.6 Luna, the smallest model in OpenAI's GPT-5.6 family. That was reported by Engadget on 12 August 2026, and the larger GPT-5.6 models need a paid plan. A small model is quick and cheap to run, which helps explain how OpenAI can offer it without a text cap. Small models are generally weaker on long, multi-step tasks.
Gemini Free changes on 9 October 2026. Google's help page, Changes to Gemini model access and limits, says: "Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account." The same page lists Flash-Lite as the only model for accounts with no plan. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash. AI Pro adds Pro. The page covers personal Google accounts only. A work or school account managed by an administrator is not part of this change.
How is free usage metered, and when does it reset?
All three vendors now count usage by the work done, not by a fixed number of messages. A long chat with a big file attached costs more than a short question, because the model reads the whole conversation again for every reply.
Claude uses a rolling five-hour session. Your allowance refills as older use falls out of the window, so there is no midnight reset. Anthropic does not publish a message count for Free. It says Pro gives "at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free". Paid plans also have a weekly limit on top of the session limit. When you hit the cap, Claude shows when you can send again. How Claude's five-hour and weekly usage limits work covers the counting in detail, and what the Claude free tier actually allows covers the Free plan alone.
ChatGPT made text chat unlimited for Free and Go accounts from the week of 10 August 2026, as reported by Engadget. Some features still have their own weekly caps: file and image uploads, image generation, deep research and voice mode. OpenAI does not publish those caps. You can see what you have used under Settings, then Usage.
Gemini uses what Google calls "compute-based usage limits that will refresh every five hours until you reach your weekly limit". So Gemini has both a five-hour refill and a weekly ceiling, even on the free plan. Google says the cost of each prompt depends on "the complexity of your prompt, the features that you use and the length of your chat". Media generation and Deep Research use more of your allowance than plain chat.
File uploads, web search and image generation on the free plans
Web search. All three free plans can search the web for current information. Claude lists "Search the web, create files, and run code" on its Free plan. Gemini searches with Google Search. ChatGPT Free includes search.
File uploads. All three accept documents and images on the free plan. ChatGPT Free has a weekly upload cap and a 500 MB Library for stored files. On Claude and Gemini, a large file uses more of your session allowance, because the model must read it with every reply. If a long PDF (portable document format) file drains your Claude allowance fast, that is the reason. Start a new chat for each new document.
Running code and making files. Claude Free can run code and create files such as spreadsheets and documents. It can also build artifacts, which are small apps or pages shown next to the chat. ChatGPT Free can analyse uploaded data.
Image generation. ChatGPT Free and Gemini Free can both make images, with limits. ChatGPT counts image generation against a weekly cap. Gemini counts it against the compute allowance, at a higher cost than text. The Claude pricing page lists no image generation on any plan. Claude can draw diagrams and charts as code inside an artifact, but it does not make photos or illustrations.
Memory and projects on the free plans
Claude Free includes "Memory across conversations" and up to 5 projects, according to the pricing page on 6 October 2026. A project holds files and instructions that every chat inside it can see. Pro removes the project limit.
ChatGPT Free has memory, but Engadget reported in August 2026 that it is more limited than on paid plans. Free users can also use custom GPTs that other people have built.
Gemini Free offers Gems, which are saved custom assistants with their own instructions. What happens to your saved chats depends on the Keep Activity setting, covered in the next section.
Do free chats train the model by default?
This is where the three plans differ most. Each one has a setting you should open on day one.
ChatGPT uses free chats to improve its models unless you opt out. Engadget reported in August 2026 that training is on by default. Turn it off under Settings, then Data Controls.
Gemini ties training to the Keep Activity setting. Google's Gemini Apps privacy help page says that activity is used "to provide, develop and improve its services (including training generative AI models)". It also says "A subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers". With Keep Activity on, chats are deleted after 18 months by default. With it off, chats are still kept for 72 hours. A chat that a human reviewed is kept for up to three years, even after you delete it. The page does not say whether the setting starts on, so open it and check.
Claude asks you to choose. Anthropic's privacy page says it uses chats to improve its models if "You choose to allow us to use your chats and coding sessions to improve Claude". The choice is a model-improvement switch in Settings, then Privacy. It works the same way on every consumer plan, so paying does not change it. Check which way yours is set.
Which free plans show ads?
ChatGPT Free shows ads, and so does ChatGPT Go. OpenAI announced on 16 January 2026 that ads would appear at the bottom of answers when a sponsored product matches the topic. It said users under 18 would not see ads, and that sensitive topics such as health and politics would be excluded. ChatGPT Plus and higher plans have no ads.
Claude has no ads on any plan. Anthropic made that commitment in Claude is a space to think on 4 February 2026. It said Claude's answers would not be influenced by advertisers.
Gemini has no ads in the app as of 6 October 2026. Google has said both that it had no plans for them and, later in 2026, that it is open to the idea. Watch for a change.
What does the cheapest paid tier of each cost?
Each vendor sells a low tier above Free. The prices below are US monthly list prices, read on 6 October 2026. Local prices and taxes differ by country.

]Gemini AI Plus costs $4.99 a month. It adds the Flash model back and doubles the free usage limit: Google's help page calls it "2x higher than standard limits".
ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month. It still shows ads and still has capped features, but OpenAI says it allows larger file uploads and more image generation than Free.
Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month on annual billing. Claude Pro sits a level above the other two. It includes at least five times the Free session usage, the Opus model, unlimited projects and Claude Code. Claude and ChatGPT subscription costs compared lines up the higher tiers too.
Which free AI plan should you use?
For writing. Claude Free is the strongest choice if you write in focused sessions. You get Sonnet with no ads. A project can hold your style guide so every chat follows it. The five-hour cap is the trade. If you write in short bursts across the whole day, ChatGPT Free never stops you, but you write with a smaller model.
For coding. Claude Free gives the better model for reading and fixing code, and it can run code. A long debugging chat uses up the session fast, because every reply re-reads every file you pasted. Claude Code is not on Free. ChatGPT Free is fine for short snippets and quick syntax questions. After 9 October, Gemini Free runs on Flash-Lite, which is built for speed and low cost rather than long, hard tasks.
For students. ChatGPT Free has no text cap, which matters during an exam week. OpenAI says users under 18 do not see ads. Claude Free is better for working through a long reading from an uploaded file, inside the session limit. Using Claude as a student covers how students get the most from it.
For occasional questions. Any of the three works. ChatGPT Free has no cap to think about, and Claude Free has no ads. Gemini Free is convenient if you already use Google's apps every day.
When is the cheapest paid tier the better spend?
Pay when the limit costs you more time than the price costs you money. These signals help.
- Upgrade Gemini to AI Plus if you liked Gemini before 9 October. AI Plus is the cheapest way to get the Flash model back, at the lowest price in the chart above.
- Upgrade ChatGPT to Go if you hit the weekly upload or image caps more than once a month. Go does not remove ads, so you pay for more capacity only.
- Upgrade Claude to Pro if you hit the five-hour cap most days, or you need Claude Code or Opus. Whether Claude Pro is worth it weighs the price against how you actually use it.
- Stay on free if you hit a limit less than once a week. Waiting for the refill is cheaper than any plan.
Some people do best with two free plans side by side. For example, use Claude Free for focused work and ChatGPT Free when the Claude session runs out. That costs nothing and covers most of a working day.
FAQ
Is the free version of Gemini still worth using after 9 October 2026?
For short questions and quick searches, yes. From 9 October 2026, Google's help page says personal accounts with no plan get Flash-Lite only, which is Google's lightest model. It is fast, but it is built for low cost rather than long, hard tasks. If you need Flash again, Google AI Plus restores it and doubles the usage limit.
Does ChatGPT Free really have unlimited messages?
Text chat is unlimited for Free accounts from the week of 10 August 2026, as reported by Engadget. File and image uploads, image generation, deep research and voice mode still have weekly caps. OpenAI does not publish those numbers, but you can see your use under Settings, then Usage.
How often does the Claude free plan limit reset?
Claude uses a rolling five-hour session. Your allowance refills as older use leaves the window, so there is no fixed daily reset time. When you hit the limit, Claude shows when you can send your next message. A long chat or a big file uses the allowance faster, because the model re-reads the whole conversation with every reply.
Which free AI plan does not train on my chats?
Each one has a setting that controls it. In ChatGPT, training is on by default and you turn it off in Settings, then Data Controls. In Gemini, the Keep Activity setting controls it, and Google still keeps chats for 72 hours when it is off. In Claude, a model-improvement switch in the privacy settings controls it, and Anthropic says it uses chats only if you allow it.
Which free AI chatbot has no ads?
Claude has no ads on any plan, and Anthropic committed to that in February 2026. The Gemini app had no ads as of 6 October 2026. ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go show ads at the bottom of some answers, except for users under 18 and on sensitive topics such as health.
