The Claude vs ChatGPT subscription cost question has a short answer. The two price ladders are almost the same, so price alone will not decide it for you. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20 a month. Each company also sells a heavy tier at $100 and a heaviest tier at $200. The one real gap sits at the bottom of the ladder, where OpenAI sells an $8 tier called Go and Anthropic sells nothing between Free and Pro.

That is 9 tiers, and above zero the two ladders match each other step for step. Both companies are pricing against the same guess about what one person will pay for one seat, so they land on the same numbers.

Why neither company publishes a messages per month number

You cannot work out a cost per message, because neither vendor will tell you how many messages a plan buys. Anthropic's help pages say usage depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, which model you are talking to, and the effort level you picked. No fixed number is published, so there is nothing to divide the price by.

Both products also measure usage over a rolling window rather than a monthly quota. Anthropic describes Max as a multiple of Pro usage per five hour session, so the window resets during your working day and not at the end of the month. Paid plans add a weekly ceiling on top of that short window. This is why two people paying the same $20 can have completely different experiences of the same plan.

What the free plans give you

Claude Free costs $0. As of 5 August 2026 Anthropic lists chat on web, iOS, Android and desktop, plus web search, memory, file creation, connectors and extended thinking. Claude Code, the coding tool that runs in your terminal, is not part of the free tier. That single exclusion is what moves most developers onto a paid seat.

ChatGPT Free costs the same and has the same shape. You get the current models at a low limit, and the expensive features are gated. Codex, OpenAI's coding tool, is available on the free tier with a small allowance.

Free is the correct answer for a lot of people. If you ask a handful of questions a day and you do not write code, stay on free and spend the money somewhere else. What the Claude free tier actually allows is worth reading before you assume you need to pay.

Where ChatGPT Go fits, and why Claude has no answer to it

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month. It sits between Free and Plus: higher limits than free, fewer features than Plus. Anthropic sells nothing at that price. If your budget is genuinely under ten dollars a month, ChatGPT is cheaper, because it is the only one of the two selling at that level.

This is the clearest price difference in the whole comparison, and it stops mattering the moment your budget reaches $20. From there upward the two ladders sit on top of each other. Claude Pro against ChatGPT Plus at the same price

Both cost $20 a month, so the decision is about what comes in the box. Two differences carry real money.

Claude Pro includes Claude Code. Anthropic states that Pro and Max cover the Claude apps and Claude Code in the terminal under one subscription, and that the usage limits are shared across both. Shared is the important word: a long coding session draws on the same allowance your chat window uses, so a heavy afternoon in the terminal can close the chat window too.

Claude Pro can be billed for a year up front. ChatGPT Plus cannot. As of 5 August 2026 Anthropic sells a Pro seat for twelve months at a discount, while OpenAI lists annual billing for its Business and Enterprise plans only. A Plus seat is a monthly charge, every month.

Paying yearly moves a Claude Pro seat from $240 to $200 over twelve months. That is a real saving and a real commitment, so take it after a month of paying monthly, once you know you still want the seat. Everything else at this price point is a judgement about the models and the interface, and you can test that for nothing on both free tiers. When is a Max or ChatGPT Pro tier cheaper than staying put?

Above the base tier both companies sell usage multipliers. Claude Max is $100 for five times Pro usage per five hour session, or $200 for twenty times. ChatGPT Pro is $100 for five times Plus usage, or $200 for twenty times.

Read those multipliers carefully, because each one is measured against its own vendor's base plan. Five times Pro and five times Plus are not the same quantity of work, since Pro and Plus do not start from the same allowance and neither allowance is published. Treat the multiplier as a direction of travel, not as a measurement you can compare across companies.

The test that works is simple. Count the hours you lost last month waiting for a limit to reset. If those hours are worth more to you than the price of the upgrade, upgrade. If you have never been blocked, you do not need the tier, whatever the plan page says about it. Trying a heavier tier for a month is a small risk, because stepping back down from Max to Pro keeps the month you have already paid for and takes effect when that billing period ends. Is paying for Claude worth it for coding?

This is the question people keep asking around this comparison, so here is the honest version.

On the Anthropic side, Claude Code arrives with Pro and Max at no extra charge, and its usage comes out of the same pool as the chat apps. One payment, one pool, one number to watch. That is easy to reason about, and it is the main reason developers pick the Claude subscription over the ChatGPT one.

On the OpenAI side, Codex is available across the ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, with the allowance rising as the tier rises. OpenAI changed how Codex usage is counted on 2 April 2026: instead of counting messages, it draws on credits that track API token usage. Plus and Pro subscribers who run out can buy more credits rather than move up a tier. That is more flexible than a hard stop, and it also means a heavy week can cost more than the subscription itself.

The practical advice is the same for both products. Start on the base tier of whichever one you prefer using. Work for a month. Upgrade only if being blocked breaks your concentration often enough that you notice. Buying for a team rather than for yourself

Team pricing separates the two products slightly. As of 5 August 2026 a Claude Team standard seat is $25 a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually. ChatGPT Business matches both of those numbers. Anthropic then adds a premium seat at $125 monthly or $100 annually, carrying five times the usage of a standard seat.
