How to leave a Claude Team or Enterprise org

The Claude help center documents no way to leave a Team or Enterprise org on your own. See who must remove you and what happens to your chats and projects.

How do you leave a Claude Team or Enterprise organization?

To leave a Claude Team or Enterprise organization, another person has to remove you. The Claude help center was checked on 30 October 2026, and it documents no self-serve leave path for members. A member who is not an Owner asks an organization Owner to remove them. An Owner or Primary Owner cannot remove themselves, so another Owner or Primary Owner has to do it.

The interface and the help articles change. Before you act, open the help center article on managing members on Team and Enterprise plans and read the current text. If a leave option has appeared in your workspace since this check, use it.

Who has to remove you, by role

The help center describes two cases. Which one applies depends only on your role in the organization.

  • You are a member, not an Owner. The help article on what happens to a removed user's data says: "you will need to contact an organization Owner to have your account removed". No menu path for members is documented, so do not look for one. Send the request to an Owner.
  • You are an Owner or a Primary Owner. The manage-members article says you "can't remove yourself from your organization". Another Primary Owner or Owner must remove you. This means a sole Owner cannot leave through removal alone.

The Owner does the removal from Organization settings > Members. There is a menu next to your name, and the Owner picks the option to remove you from the team. Two special cases change this path:

  • Enterprise with SCIM. SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) syncs users from your company's identity provider (IdP). On these plans, Claude removes members automatically when they are removed from the IdP. Ask IT to remove you from the IdP.
  • A cancelled Team plan. The remove option in Organization settings > Members is gone once the plan is cancelled.

If you are the only Owner and you want to shut down the whole workspace, you need a plan cancellation, not a removal. The steps are in how to cancel or downgrade a Claude plan.

What happens when an Owner removes you

The points below come from two help center articles, both read on 30 October 2026. One covers what happens to a user's data on removal (the removal article). The other covers managing members on Team and Enterprise plans (the manage-members article). Both pages show only a relative "updated" marker, not a fixed date.

  • Access ends at once. The manage-members article says: "They lose access to the organization immediately." Save anything you need before the Owner removes you.
  • Other members lose your chats. Remaining members can no longer open the chats you shared with the organization. This includes chat snapshots shared with the organization.
  • Projects shared with the whole organization stay. They move to the Team tab, "where remaining members can view or edit the project".
  • Private projects become inaccessible. If you shared a project with specific people, it appears under "Shared with me" for them.
  • Skills you never shared are kept. The removal article says they "stay on their account and remain recoverable".
  • A re-add restores your history. If an Owner adds you back to the same organization with the same email address, your previous chats, projects and skills come back.
  • Your account is not deleted. The removal article says: "Removing a user from your organization doesn't delete their account or data." The Primary Owner's organization data exports still include your data.

Permanent deletion is a separate step, and you cannot start it yourself. Only an Owner or Primary Owner can ask Claude Support to permanently delete a removed user's account and data. The deletion cannot be undone. If the Owner needs a copy, the article says to run an organization data export from the Primary Owner's account first. If the organization uses SCIM, remove the user in the IdP first. Otherwise the IdP can provision them again.

This matters if you handled customer material inside the workspace. Shared projects and the organization's exports stay with the organization after you leave. Which Claude plan fits client data explains how the rules for that data differ by plan.

Does your personal Claude account survive?

Yes, if you kept it separate. If you have a personal Claude account on the same email as the organization, you can keep both. The help article on moving a personal account into an organization says: "Your personal account stays active. You can switch between it and your organization account from your account menu." The article puts the switcher in the lower-left corner, behind your initials or name.

The risk runs the other way. Moving work from a personal account into a Team or Enterprise workspace is one-way. The article says: "Bringing your work into a Team or Enterprise workspace is one-way." Content you move into the organization cannot be moved back, so it stays with the organization after you leave. The same article gives one piece of advice: "Export your data while you still have access." Some items never move at all, such as custom skills and Cowork sessions. Read the article for the full list before you decide.

If you pay for Pro or Max through the Apple App Store, "Keep both accounts" is your only option when you join an organization. To move your work in, you would first have to cancel the iOS subscription in your Apple ID settings. Why an App Store subscription blocks web sign-up covers the same Apple billing link from another side.

Enterprise domain claim: when staying out is not an option

In a domain claim, your company pulls every account on its email domain into its Enterprise organization. Doing nothing does not keep you out. The details below come from two help articles. The admin article on claiming and migrating accounts is dated 2 September 2026. The user article on responding to a domain claim is dated 17 August 2026.

  • Enterprise only. "Domain claiming is supported on Claude Enterprise plans only." Team admins can block new personal accounts on a verified domain, but they cannot claim or migrate existing ones. The differences between Claude Team and Enterprise lists what else separates the two plans.
  • One deadline for everyone. "The migration deadline is a single date for the claim, not a rolling per-user timer." The deadline is at least 30 days after the admin starts the claim. A domain verified later gets its own claim and its own 30-day window.
  • Two choices. If you merge, your chats, projects, files and memory move into a new Enterprise account. A merge cannot be undone, and your personal account no longer exists afterwards. If you join fresh, you get a clean account: "None of your personal account data transfers." Even a merge leaves some items behind, such as custom skills and connected apps.
  • No choice means a fresh account. Users who do not choose by the deadline "are given a fresh Enterprise account by default and their data will be emailed to them".
  • Paid plans end. "Paid subscriptions (Pro and Max) are automatically canceled with a prorated refund." The general rules are in the Claude subscription refund policy.
  • App Store plans do not end. The claim does not cancel Pro or Max bought through the Apple App Store. The article says these users "need to cancel their subscription themselves through their Apple ID settings". Until they do, Apple keeps charging.
  • HIPAA readiness or CMEK. If the organization has HIPAA readiness or customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) turned on, the merge option is not available. You can only join fresh, and nothing from your personal account transfers. You can still be claimed and notified.
  • Not in the IdP means locked out. "Anyone not in the IdP won't be able to sign in to the Enterprise workspace." Their personal accounts are deactivated at the deadline. IT has to add them to the IdP before that date.

Merging is not always offered in a domain claim, so export your data before the deadline. The notice you receive names the deadline, which is at least 30 days away.

A short checklist before you ask to be removed

  1. Find out who holds the Owner role. Your workspace admin or IT team can tell you.
  2. Copy out anything you need from the organization account. Access ends the moment you are removed.
  3. Check whether you have a personal account on the same email. Switch to it once to confirm that it still works.
  4. Send the Owner your request, with the email address the organization knows you by. If you also want your account and data deleted, say so, because only an Owner can ask Support for that.
  5. If your company uses SCIM, send the request to IT. Removal in the IdP is what removes you from Claude.

FAQ

Can I leave a Claude Team or Enterprise organization by myself?

The help center documents no self-serve leave path, as of a check on 30 October 2026. A member who is not an Owner has to contact an organization Owner, who removes them under Organization settings > Members. An Owner or Primary Owner cannot remove themselves, so another Owner or Primary Owner must do it. Re-check the help article on managing members, because the interface can change.

Does removal from a Claude organization delete my account?

No. The help center says removing a user from an organization does not delete their account or data. If an Owner adds you back with the same email address, your previous chats, projects and skills are restored. Permanent deletion needs an Owner or Primary Owner to ask Claude Support, and it cannot be undone.

What happens to my chats and projects after I am removed?

Your access ends immediately. Remaining members can no longer open the chats you shared with the organization, including shared snapshots. Projects shared with the whole organization move to the Team tab, where members can still view and edit them. Private projects become inaccessible to others. Skills you never shared stay recoverable on your account.

Will my personal Claude Pro account be affected?

A personal account on the same email stays active, and you can switch between it and the organization account from the account menu. Work you already moved into the organization does not come back, because that move is one-way. An Enterprise domain claim is different. It cancels Pro and Max with a prorated refund, except App Store plans, which you must cancel yourself in your Apple ID settings.

What happens if I ignore an Enterprise domain claim?

The claim has one deadline for all users, at least 30 days after the admin starts it. If you do not choose to merge or join fresh by then, you get a fresh Enterprise account by default, and your data is emailed to you. If you are not in your company's identity provider, you cannot sign in to the Enterprise workspace, and your personal account is deactivated at the deadline.
