Claude: App Store subscription blocks signup
Claude web checkout refuses while your App Store subscription is still inside its paid period or in billing retry. What to check, and how long to wait.
Why the web signup says your App Store subscription has not ended
Claude refuses a new web subscription while an App Store subscription on the same account is still open in Apple's records. Open does not mean you are still being charged. A subscription you cancelled last week stays open until its paid period runs out, and a subscription whose renewal charge failed stays open while Apple keeps retrying the card. The web signup reads that state, sees a subscription it does not own, and stops rather than billing you a second time for one account.
So this is a question of order, not a setting you can toggle. You finish the Apple side, confirm Apple itself reports the entry as finished, and then subscribe on the web. The only real variable is how long the Apple side takes, and that can run from a day to a year depending on which state the entry is in.
What "not fully ended" means on Apple's side
An App Store subscription has more states than on and off. Four of them look ended to a reader and do not look ended to Apple.
Cancelled, still inside the paid period. Cancelling switches off auto-renewal. It does not end the term you already paid for. The entry stays in the active list in Apple's subscription settings and shows an expiry date where it used to show a renewal date. Apple's own cancellation page names the signal: "If there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled." You keep paid access until that date, and Apple counts the subscription as live until then.
In billing retry. The renewal charge failed, because the card expired, the bank declined it, or the balance was short. Apple does not end the subscription at that point. It moves the subscription into billing retry and tries to collect for up to 60 days. Through that window the subscription is neither renewed nor finished, which is the state that confuses people most: no money has moved, nothing feels active, and the record is still sitting there blocking a new one. Anthropic's own billing behaves in a comparable way, and what happens when a Claude payment is declined covers that side, though the retry schedule is not Apple's.
In a billing grace period. A developer can ask Apple to keep paid access switched on while it retries a failed charge. Apple offers 3, 16 or 28 days for this. Where it applies, you still have paid features during a failed renewal, so the subscription feels perfectly healthy while its payment is unresolved.
Paused. Some subscriptions can be paused from the same screen. A paused entry shows a resume date. Pause is a scheduled return, so it ends in a renewal and not in an expiry, which is why waiting it out does not clear the block.
Why Claude will not start a second subscription
Your Claude account carries one subscription and one billing owner. That owner is either Anthropic's own billing or an app store, never both. The two cannot share the plan, because each renews on its own clock and neither can see the other's charges. If a web subscription started while the Apple record was still live, Apple's next successful retry would renew a plan you are now paying Anthropic for directly. Anthropic could not undo that charge, because Apple took the money and Anthropic never sees it. Blocking the checkout is the cheap version of that problem.
The same boundary explains why the cancel button is not on Claude's website for these accounts. The store that took the payment owns the cancellation, which is the rule behind cancelling or downgrading a Claude plan from the right place.
Check the Apple subscription entry first
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, then tap the Claude entry. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then click Account Settings. Apple documents the same path, and the browser equivalent, on Cancel a subscription from Apple.
Read the entry for four things before you touch anything.
- Whether the label next to the date says the subscription renews or expires. Renews means auto-renewal is still on, so nothing has been cancelled yet.
- The date itself. That date is the earliest the block can clear on its own.
- Whether Apple is reporting a payment problem on the entry. That means billing retry, and the date on screen is not a promise.
- Which Apple Account you are signed in to. A purchase made on a second Apple Account, or shared through Family Sharing, does not appear here at all, and you will spend an afternoon looking at the wrong list.
The order of operations
- Cancel on Apple's side while the Cancel Subscription button is still there. Apple asks for this at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Cancel later than that and the next charge can still go through, which adds another full period to your wait.
- If the entry is in billing retry and you intend to move to web billing, cancel it instead of fixing the card. Updating the payment method lets the retry succeed, which starts a fresh paid period and pushes your earliest clear date a full term into the future.
- If the entry is paused, cancel it rather than waiting for the resume date, because a pause ends in a renewal.
- Write down the expiry date shown on the entry. That is the date you are waiting for.
- Wait for the entry to leave the active list and appear under expired or inactive. That is the state the web signup needs to see.
- Sign in to claude.ai, open Settings and then Billing, and subscribe there. Keep the Apple receipt email: Anthropic's invoices only cover what Anthropic charged you, which is worth knowing if you need a VAT invoice for a Claude subscription for the earlier months.
Do not delete your Claude account to clear the block. The subscription lives on the Apple Account and survives the deletion, so you lose your history and the charge continues.
What happens to access while you wait
If you cancel while the paid period still has time left, nothing changes until the expiry date. You keep paid access, and you can start the web subscription on that same day with no gap at all. This is the good case, and it is why checking the date first is worth the two minutes.
If the period has already lapsed, or the renewal is in retry with no grace period, the account sits on the free plan until you subscribe again. Free Claude still works, with a smaller usage allowance and without the paid features listed in the Claude Pro price and limits breakdown. Dropping to free does not delete your chats or projects, because those belong to the account and not to the plan.
How long the wait can run
A cancelled monthly subscription clears at the end of the month you paid for, so the wait is whatever is left of that month. A cancelled annual subscription clears at the end of the year you paid for, and that can be eleven months away. If you are on the annual term, read how annual and monthly Claude billing differ before you decide to wait rather than keep using what you paid for.
Billing retry runs for up to 60 days from the failed renewal. It can end sooner in either direction: a successful charge restarts the subscription, and a cancellation ends the retry. The worst case is an annual term that then fails to renew, because the retry window opens after the paid year closes. Plan for weeks, not hours, and do not promise yourself a same-day switch unless the entry already shows an expiry date that is close.
Refunds and proration: what not to assume
Apple decides what happens to money Apple collected. Do not assume the unused part of an App Store term comes back, and do not assume it is prorated, because that outcome is Apple's call on each request and not a published rule you can rely on. Apple's own page is careful about it: "Some purchases from the App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Books, or other Apple services might be eligible for a refund." You ask through Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com, and Apple's guidance is to "Wait 24 to 48 hours for an update on your request."
Anthropic support cannot refund or cancel an Apple charge, because the transaction is between you and Apple. For which Claude charges can be reversed, and by whom, see whether a Claude subscription can be refunded. If you need the money back before you resubscribe, file the Apple request first and wait for its answer, because subscribing on the web in the meantime removes your one argument that you did not use the service.
When the web checkout still refuses
Check the Apple entry again and read which list it is in. If it is still under active with an expiry date in the future, nothing is broken: the date has not arrived. If it has moved to expired and the web checkout still refuses, work through the cheap causes in order.
First, confirm you are signed in to the Claude account that held the subscription. Signing in with a different method can land you on a different account, and the block you are reading may belong to the other one. Second, try the checkout in a browser rather than in the mobile app, since the app can hold an older copy of your subscription state until you sign out and back in. Third, check Family Sharing and any second Apple Account, because a subscription bought on another Apple Account is still linked to your Claude account and will not show in your own subscription list.
If all of that is clean, contact Anthropic support with two facts: the Apple receipt for the last charge, and the expiry date Apple shows on the entry. Those two lines are the evidence that the store side is finished, and they turn a vague report into something support can act on.
FAQ
Why does Claude say my App Store subscription has not fully ended?
Because Apple still holds a live record for it. Cancelling an App Store subscription only switches off auto-renewal, so the subscription stays active until the period you already paid for expires. A failed renewal does not end it either: Apple puts it into billing retry and tries to collect for up to 60 days. Claude will not open a second subscription on the same account while either record exists, because Apple's next successful charge would renew a plan you are already paying for on the web.
Can I fix the failed Apple payment and then switch to web billing?
You can, but it makes the wait longer. Updating the card lets the retry succeed, which starts a new paid period and moves the earliest date the block can clear a full term into the future. If your goal is web billing, cancel the subscription in Apple's subscription settings instead and let the current period finish.
Will I lose access to Claude while I wait for the App Store subscription to expire?
Not if there is time left on the period you paid for. Cancelling keeps paid access until the expiry date shown on the Apple entry, so you can subscribe on the web that day and never drop. If the period has already lapsed, or the renewal failed with no grace period, the account uses the free plan until you subscribe again. Your chats and projects stay on the account either way.
Will Apple refund the part of the term I do not use?
That is Apple's decision, not Anthropic's, and it is not guaranteed. Apple's refund page says only that purchases "might be eligible for a refund", and asks you to allow 24 to 48 hours for an answer after you file at reportaproblem.apple.com. Anthropic cannot see or reverse a charge Apple collected, so there is no second route to ask.
