Ads in ChatGPT: Which Plans Show Them
ChatGPT shows ads on Free and Go, not on Plus or above. Where ads appear, what advertisers receive, which settings you control, and the cheapest way out.
Which ChatGPT plans show ads?
ChatGPT ads appear on two plans: Free and Go. As of October 2026, OpenAI's help center says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not show ads. If you pay for Plus or any plan above it, you see no ads. If you use ChatGPT for free, or you pay for Go, you may see them.
The rest of this guide covers where the ads sit on the page and in which countries they run. It then covers what OpenAI says advertisers receive, and the settings you can change. It closes with the price question: what the cheapest ad-free plan costs, and how that compares with Claude's free plan. Every claim about OpenAI's policy here comes from OpenAI's own announcements and help center, checked on 6 October 2026. Policies like this change, so check the date before you rely on it.
ChatGPT ads by plan, as of October 2026
- Free: ads may appear. A separate ad-free mode exists inside the Free plan, with lower limits. It is covered further down.
- Go: ads may appear. Go is a paid plan, and it still carries ads.
- Plus: no ads.
- Pro: no ads.
- Business, Enterprise and Edu: no ads. These are workspace plans that an organisation buys and manages for its people.
The Go result surprises people, because they paid. OpenAI introduced ads to help fund its free and low-cost tiers, and Go is the low-cost tier. So the line between ads and no ads sits between Go and Plus.
Some users and some conversations never get ads, even on Free or Go. OpenAI says it does not show ads to accounts it believes belong to people under 18. It also says it keeps ads out of conversations about health, mental health and politics. OpenAI describes the ads as shown to logged-in adult users.
Where do ads appear in ChatGPT?
Ads beside text answers
The first format, live since the US test began on 9 February 2026, is a text ad. It sits at the bottom of an answer, under the reply, and it is labeled as sponsored. It does not appear inside the answer text. OpenAI states plainly that "ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers." You cannot check that claim from the outside. What you can check is the label: anything marked as sponsored is an ad, and the answer above it is the model's reply.
The ad is chosen by matching what advertisers submit against your conversation. When ad personalization is on, OpenAI lists the inputs: the topic of the current chat, your past chats, and your past interactions with ads. If ChatGPT memory is on, saved memories and recent chats can also feed that choice.
Visual ads beside generated images
On 5 October 2026, OpenAI announced a second, image-based format. In OpenAI's words: "Initially, we'll test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT. Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created." The test starts later in October 2026, in the US only, with a first group of advertisers. The ad is a picture of a product or a service, shown next to the image you asked for. It is not drawn into your image.
OpenAI has not said that the visual format will reach any plan that is ad-free today. This guide does not guess beyond what OpenAI has stated.
In which countries does ChatGPT show ads?
Ads started as a US test on 9 February 2026, for logged-in adults on Free and Go. OpenAI's help center now describes ads as rolling out gradually to eligible users on the Free and Go plans "in select regions". It does not promise every region.
Press reports through August and September 2026 described the expansion. They covered India in August, and self-service ad buying for advertisers in Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa from 31 August. Those reports describe where companies can buy ads. Whether you personally see one depends on your region and your plan, so the help center article "Ads in ChatGPT" is the source to trust for your country. The new visual format is a US-only test at first.
What do advertisers receive from ChatGPT?
The help center is direct on this point: "We do not share your conversations with ChatGPT with advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers." It adds that advertisers do not get your chats, chat history, memories or personal details. What they receive is aggregated data about how their ads perform, such as total views or total clicks. Aggregated means counted across many users, with no single person in it.
The 5 October announcement also added measurement partners. Some are attribution companies, such as AppsFlyer, Adjust and Branch. An attribution company tells an advertiser whether a click on an ad later turned into a purchase or an app install. Others check brand suitability, which means whether an ad appeared next to content the brand wants to avoid. OpenAI says its brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and IAS (Integral Ad Science) run without access to user conversations.
One boundary matters here. These promises cover what happens inside ChatGPT. When you click an ad, you leave ChatGPT and load the advertiser's site or app. From that point, the advertiser's own privacy policy applies, along with any tracking on its pages. Not clicking is the simplest control you have.
If you handle other people's data in ChatGPT or Claude, the ad question is only part of the picture. Which plan may hold client data in Claude is a separate decision, and it depends on training and retention terms.
Which settings control ChatGPT ads?
The controls live in Settings, under Ad Controls. Here is what each one does:
- Ads personalization: turn it off to stop ChatGPT using other chats, ad history and inferred topics to pick ads.
- Delete ads data: clears your ad history and the interests ChatGPT has built for ads.
- Dismiss an ad: hides that ad and lets you send feedback on it.
- Why this ad: shows the reason a specific ad was picked for you.
Read the personalization switch carefully, because it does less than its name suggests. OpenAI says: "If you turn off ads personalization, you will still see ads based on the context of your current chat thread, but we won't use other chat threads, ads history or topics to inform the ads we show you." So the switch changes which ads you see. It does not change whether you see ads, or how many.
Memory is a second path into ad selection. When memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories and recent chats when it picks an ad. Turning off memory and past-chat reference in the personalization settings stops that, but it also stops ChatGPT using them to improve your answers. That trade is yours to make.
Can you turn off ChatGPT ads without paying?
Yes, but only on the Free plan, and only with lower limits. OpenAI offers an ad-free mode for Free users. It removes ads, and in exchange you get fewer messages per day and reduced feature access. OpenAI's example is that tools such as image generation are not available in that mode.
Go has no ad-free switch. A Go subscriber who wants no ads has two routes. One is to drop back to Free and choose the ad-free mode, which gives up what Go paid for. The other is to upgrade to Plus or higher. There is no setting that removes ads from Go while keeping Go's limits.
The ad-free Free mode suits a light user who asks a few text questions a day. It does not suit someone who generates images, because that tool is the part it removes.
What is the cheapest ad-free ChatGPT plan?
The cheapest paid plan with no ads is Plus. The prices below are list prices in US dollars per month, as published on OpenAI's and Anthropic's pricing pages and checked on 6 October 2026. Prices differ by country, and Go in particular has local pricing in several markets.

]Go costs 8 US dollars a month and shows ads. Plus costs 20 US dollars a month and does not. So the price of removing ads on a paid ChatGPT plan is the gap between those two plans. You also get Plus's higher limits and features for that money, so ads are rarely the only reason to move up.
If you write code, Plus also includes OpenAI's coding agent, and using Codex with a ChatGPT subscription explains what that includes before you count it as part of the value.
How does that compare with Claude's free plan?
Claude does not show ads, on its free plan or on any paid plan. Anthropic stated this in a post titled "Claude is a space to think", published on 4 February 2026: "Claude will remain ad-free. Our users won't see 'sponsored' links adjacent to their conversations with Claude." The same post adds one caveat: "Should we need to revisit this approach, we'll be transparent about our reasons for doing so." As of October 2026, Anthropic's pricing page makes no mention of ads on any plan.
So at zero cost, the comparison is this. ChatGPT Free shows ads unless you pick the ad-free mode, which cuts your limits and removes image generation. Claude Free costs 0 dollars and has no ads, with its own usage limits. Those limits are the real constraint on a free plan, and what Claude's free tier actually allows covers how they work.
At the first paid step with no ads, both sit at the same list price. Plus costs 20 dollars a month, and Claude Pro costs 20 dollars a month. Since ads do not separate those two plans, the choice comes down to limits, models and tools. The full Claude vs ChatGPT subscription cost comparison lines up every tier side by side.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT Plus have ads?
No. As of October 2026, OpenAI's help center says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not show ads. Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans, and only for logged-in adults in the regions where OpenAI has turned them on.
Can I remove ads from ChatGPT without paying?
Yes, on the Free plan. OpenAI offers an ad-free mode for Free users, but it comes with fewer messages per day and no access to some tools, such as image generation. Turning off ads personalization does not remove ads. It only stops ChatGPT using your other chats and ad history to choose them. Go has no ad-free switch, so a Go user must move to Free or upgrade to Plus.
Do advertisers see my ChatGPT conversations?
OpenAI says no: "We do not share your conversations with ChatGPT with advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers." Advertisers receive aggregated performance data, such as total views and clicks. OpenAI also says its brand suitability partners work without access to user conversations. Once you click an ad and land on the advertiser's site, that site's own privacy policy applies.
Does Claude show ads on its free plan?
No. Anthropic said on 4 February 2026 that "Claude will remain ad-free", with no sponsored links beside conversations. That covers the free plan and every paid plan. Anthropic added that if it ever revisits this, it will explain its reasons publicly.
