ChatGPT Plus price and limits: what you get

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month in the US as of 3 November 2026. See what it adds over Free and Go, the Codex limits, how resets work and when to cancel.

What does ChatGPT Plus cost?

The ChatGPT Plus price is $20 a month on OpenAI's pricing page, read on 3 November 2026. Plus adds the advanced GPT-6 reasoning models and more Codex use than Free and Go. OpenAI publishes no fixed chat message cap for Plus. The Codex numbers it does publish are estimates per five-hour period, and weekly limits may apply on top.

The prices below come from chatgpt.com/pricing with the page set to English (United States). When read on 3 November 2026, the page showed a dollar sign and no currency code. The ChatGPT pricing docs list the same amounts and name the three Pro tiers.

Plus is billed monthly. The help center article What is ChatGPT Plus? says OpenAI does not support annual billing for Plus. You cannot prepay a year to get a lower rate. You manage the plan inside ChatGPT: open your profile icon, then Settings, then Account. First check that you are signed in to the account that holds the subscription.

Will I pay the same ChatGPT Plus price in my country?

Not always. The $20 figure is the US web price. When read on 3 November 2026, the pricing page showed no local-currency amounts and no tax line. It cannot tell you your final charge.

Two things change what you pay. The first is where you buy. OpenAI's multi-currency billing article covers subscriptions bought on chatgpt.com on the web. It lists 67 supported currencies, for example EUR in the EEA (European Economic Area), GBP in the United Kingdom and JPY in Japan. If you subscribe inside the iOS or Android app instead, the article says "your subscription is managed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and charges will appear in your local currency". Compare the app price with the web checkout before you pay.

The second is tax. None of the help center articles we read for this page states a tax rate for Plus. The billing information article says only that an invalid tax ID may be removed and "applicable taxes may be charged". It also says changes to billing details or a tax ID apply to future invoices only. The checkout page shows the real amount for your country.

What does ChatGPT Plus include that Free and Go do not?

The pricing page lists Plus as "Everything in Go and:", followed by these lines:

  • Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6
  • Expanded messages and uploads
  • More complex and accurate image creation
  • Expanded deep research
  • Expanded memory and context
  • Projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs
  • Expanded Codex usage
  • Expanded access to ChatGPT Work on desktop, web, and mobile
  • Early access to new features

New custom GPT creation and publishing are no longer available on personal plans, including Plus. Existing GPTs remain usable, and editing them depends on your plan and permissions.

Under the Plus column the page adds a short footnote: "Limits apply". It does not say which features the footnote covers. The help center says Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand". It also says the exact limits can change with system conditions.

For comparison, Free gives unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails. The help center identifies GPT-5.6 Luna as the Free and Go chat model. Its other features are marked as limited, including uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and Codex access. ChatGPT Work on Free is limited to desktop.

Go is "Everything in Free and:" more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. Go's footnote says "This plan may include ads." The Plus column carries no such note. If ads affect your choice, read which ChatGPT plans show ads.

Pro is "Everything in Plus and:" a choice of 3 usage tiers, Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, and up to $500 in monthly API (application programming interface) credits. The pricing docs say "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit". They list Ultrafast mode for Pro $500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans. Which models do you get on ChatGPT Plus?

Plus includes GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna in ChatGPT Work and Codex, subject to rollout availability. GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are not selectable in regular Chat. Plus includes Astra in Work and Codex, but does not include GPT-6 Pro in Chat. Plus also has GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna in Work and Codex. GPT-5 Thinking Mini is marked as expanded. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro is marked "No" for Plus. It is a Pro-only model.

GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol are not on Free or Go. That makes Plus the cheapest personal plan with those models. Free and Go still have GPT-6 Luna in Work and Codex, subject to rollout.

Thinking levels also differ by plan. The help center article GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT shows that Plus includes the Medium and High thinking levels. Extra High and Pro are not included on Plus. Pro includes all four. To choose a model for a task, read the differences between GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna.

Is Codex included with ChatGPT Plus?

Yes. OpenAI's help article Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan says "Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go." The difference is how much you get. The pricing page marks Codex as limited on Free and Go, and lists "Expanded Codex usage" for Plus.

The pricing docs list the Plus surfaces as "Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension, and on iOS". CLI means command-line interface. IDE means integrated development environment, the editor where you write code. Setup, sign-in and daily use are covered in using Codex with a ChatGPT subscription. This page covers only the limits.

What are the ChatGPT Plus usage limits?

OpenAI documents Plus limits in two places. The help center covers chat, without numbers. The pricing docs cover Codex and ChatGPT Work, with estimates.

Chat limits on Plus

OpenAI does not publish a number for Plus chat. The models article says "Usage limits depend on your plan, the model, and your workspace settings if you use a managed workspace." The Plus article says there may be message caps, especially during high demand. Neither article gives a figure or a reset window, as read on 3 November 2026.

Other sites sometimes quote a fixed number of messages every three hours. That figure does not come from the current help center or the current pricing page. Do not plan around it. When you reach a limit, ChatGPT shows the reset time when that information is available.

Codex and ChatGPT Work limits on Plus

The pricing docs do publish estimates for Codex and ChatGPT Work. The page says: "The estimates below show local messages per five-hour period for Plus and Standard Business."

ChartPlus: estimated local messages per five-hour period, read 3 November 2026

  {
    "label": "GPT-6 Luna",
    "low_estimate": 350,
    "high_estimate": "3,000"
  }
]

The ranges are wide. GPT-6 Astra gives an estimated 5 to 45 local messages per five hours. GPT-6 Luna gives an estimated 350 to 3,000. On these estimates, the lighter model gives far more messages in the same period.

The same page puts these caveats next to the numbers. "These estimates are not fixed message limits; check your usage dashboard for current limits and reset times." "Local messages and cloud chats share your plan's usage allowance. Weekly limits may also apply." Cloud tasks may also use more of the allowance than local messages. The page gives no "as of" date, so treat the figures as a snapshot from 3 November 2026.

How do ChatGPT Plus limits reset?

Codex and ChatGPT Work use a five-hour period, and a weekly limit may apply as well. Your usage dashboard shows the current reset times. The Codex help article says that when you hit a limit you may be able to "wait until the displayed reset time". It also says OpenAI Support does not reset usage limits. Asking support will not bring your allowance back.

Eligible Plus users can purchase usage credits as well as instant resets to continue using Codex and ChatGPT Work. Credits pay for supported usage beyond your plan limits after your included allowance is used. Availability depends on your plan and account. Check Settings, then Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in the Codex app, for your balance and purchase options.

The help article Paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets says "Buying a reset is available to eligible ChatGPT Plus and Pro personal accounts on ChatGPT web and the Codex desktop app." Free, Go, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts cannot buy one. The article explains how it works:

  • "A completed purchase immediately restores both 5-hour and weekly usage."
  • The reset pulls your normal weekly allowance forward. It does not add extra usage.
  • "Your new weekly usage period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied."
  • "Your next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that first request." That is not always 7 days after you paid.

The article lists no price. You review the price and payment method at checkout. It also says "Availability may vary by account." In the desktop app's Usage settings, the Buy an instant reset option beside your usage meter appears after you have used some of your five-hour or weekly allowance.

Chat limits work differently. The articles we read describe no paid reset for chat. For chat, use the reset time ChatGPT displays.

Is there a free trial of ChatGPT Plus?

The pricing page lists no free trial for Plus, as read on 3 November 2026. Trials exist, but they run as campaigns. The promotional subscriptions FAQ says "Not all users or regions are included in every promotion." You can use a trial only if you qualify for an offer, which may arrive in ChatGPT, by email or through an invitation link.

The FAQ says "Generally, new users or users on free plans are eligible to use the invite." People who already have a paid plan may be excluded. Read the offer before you accept it. Some offers end when the promotion ends, and others turn into a paid plan. The FAQ says: "Check the renewal date and terms in your offer or at checkout."

If your offer renews and you do not want to pay, the FAQ says "cancel at least 24 hours before renewal". Watch the timing: "Some free promotions end as soon as you cancel." On those offers, cancelling early ends the free access early.

How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus, and when does it take effect?

The help article How do I cancel my ChatGPT Plus subscription? gives one rule: "Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the next subscription period." If you cancel later than that, the next charge may already have gone through.

Cancelling stops future renewals. You do not lose Plus straight away: "After an ordinary cancellation, paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period." Cancelling "does not automatically refund previous charges".

Where you bought Plus decides where you cancel. To cancel a web subscription, open your account menu in ChatGPT and select Settings, then Billing, then Cancel under Cancel plan. "Apple manages subscriptions purchased through the Apple App Store", so you cancel those through Apple. Deleting your ChatGPT account or removing the app does not cancel an App Store subscription. For Google Play, sign in to the Google account you used to buy the subscription and cancel there. Refund requests for web and Google Play purchases go to OpenAI Support. Refunds for Apple purchases go to Apple.

How does ChatGPT Plus compare with a Claude subscription?

This page covers only Plus. For side-by-side numbers, read ChatGPT and Claude subscription costs compared. If Claude's plan at the same level is your other option, Claude Pro price and limits covers it in the same format as this page.

It is billed monthly, and the help center says annual billing is not supported. Web purchases can be charged in one of 67 currencies. App store purchases are charged in your local currency. Check the checkout page for your real price and any tax.

How many messages can I send on ChatGPT Plus?

OpenAI publishes no fixed number of chat messages for Plus. The help center says Plus may include message caps, especially during high demand, and that limits depend on your plan and the model. For Codex and ChatGPT Work, the pricing docs estimate 5 to 45 local messages per five hours with GPT-6 Astra, and more with GPT-6 Luna. These are estimates, not fixed limits, and weekly limits may also apply.

When do ChatGPT Plus limits reset?

Codex and ChatGPT Work limits run on a five-hour period, and a weekly limit may apply as well. Your usage dashboard shows the reset times. For chat, ChatGPT shows the reset time when that information is available. OpenAI Support does not reset limits. Eligible Plus personal accounts can buy an instant reset of Work and Codex usage, with the price shown at checkout. Eligible accounts can also purchase credits for supported Work and Codex usage beyond their included allowance.

If I cancel ChatGPT Plus, do I keep access?

Yes, until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date, or you may be charged for the next period. Cancelling does not refund earlier charges automatically. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, cancel there. Deleting your ChatGPT account or the app does not cancel an App Store subscription.
