ChatGPT maximum conversation length reached

ChatGPT says this chat reached its maximum length? See what still works in the full chat and how to carry your project into a new chat step by step.

What the ChatGPT maximum conversation length message means

The ChatGPT maximum conversation length reached message means one chat is full, so it will not accept another message. Start a new chat to keep working. Your other chats and your Memory settings are not the problem, because OpenAI says of this kind of notice: "The limit applies to this conversation."

The closest official explanation is in OpenAI's ChatGPT Free tier FAQ. It says the "Context window full" and "Chat memory full" notices "refer to how much information ChatGPT can use in the current conversation." A context window is the amount of text the model can use at one time. That article does not use the words "maximum length", and it is written for Free users. Use it as the best official guide, and remember that other plans may differ.

The exact message you may see

The wording has changed over time. These strings come from user posts on OpenAI's community forum, because the help pages opened for this guide do not quote them.

A 2024 forum report quotes this text:

You've reached the maximum length for this conversation, but you can keep talking by starting a new chat.

A September 2026 report quotes this one:

This conversation has reached its maximum length, but you can continue by starting a new chat.

The same user quoted the "keep talking" form again in October 2026, so you may see either one. A May 2026 thread quotes a shorter form:

This conversation is too long; please start a new one.

Your app may show other words. The meaning and the next step stay the same: this chat is full, and your work continues in a new chat.

What counts toward the maximum length

The limit depends on how much content the chat holds. Both sides of the conversation count. OpenAI says: "Your messages and ChatGPT's replies both take up space. A few long exchanges can take up more room than many short ones, so there's no fixed number of messages per chat."

This explains a common surprise. A chat with a few very long pastes can fill up before a chat with many short questions.

The OpenAI help pages opened for this guide give no token or message number for one ordinary chat. If another site gives you an exact number, do not treat it as official.

The ChatGPT pricing page does not list a conversation length limit either, as of 4 November 2026. It lists "Everyday text chats" and "Chat history" as "Unlimited" on every plan it shows, but it does not say how long a single chat can grow. It does list context windows, using short labels such as 54K.

GPT Instant runs from 27K on Free to 128K on Pro. GPT Reasoning reaches 400K on Pro. The pricing page lists GPT Reasoning on Free as "Varies" rather than a number, so the chart above plots only the Go, Plus and Pro values.

A footnote on the page describes this as a shared window, which means the space for your own input is smaller than the label. The page does not connect these figures to the full-chat notice, so do not use them to predict when a chat will fill up. For plan differences, read ChatGPT Plus price and limits. For the model choices, read how GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna differ in ChatGPT.

What still works in the chat that reached the limit

OpenAI's Free tier FAQ says: "You can still read earlier messages even when you can't send another one in that chat." If the chat is in your history, you can copy details out of it. If it will not load, the FAQ suggests you refresh the page or restart the app. You can also try a private browser window, signed in to the same account.

Waiting is not a plan, because "The full-chat notice doesn't give a reset time for the original conversation."

There is one way to stay in the same chat. OpenAI says: "If the notice offers an upgrade, you can choose it to continue in the same chat." The article describes this route only for a notice that offers it. If your notice shows no upgrade option, do not buy a plan with the hope of reopening the chat.

Some users report a worse result than the help page describes. The first post in community thread 1381626 says "old chats I had that reached the max length are no longer able to be read at all", and that they stay blank. A forum reply in that thread treats the blank screen as a separate bug, and does not count it as part of the normal length limit. The only OpenAI staff post there tells the user to open a support ticket. It does not say whether full chats stay readable.

So the two sources disagree, and the question is not settled. Open your full chat now and check it. Copy anything important today, while you can see it.

How to carry your work into a new chat

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Copy what matters out of the full chat. Save your latest draft and your instructions in a document on your own computer.
  2. Start the new chat. If the notice offers a new chat with a summary, you can use it.
  3. Check the summary against your saved notes. OpenAI warns that a summary "may leave out an earlier instruction or the exact wording of something you wrote."
  4. Paste back anything the summary lost, then send one clear request.

A full chat cannot write a summary for you, because it will not accept your request. If the notice offers no summary, write a short handoff message yourself. This template works for most projects:

I am continuing work from another chat. Here is the background.

Goal: <one sentence>
Decisions already made: <short list>
Rules to follow: <tone, format, length, things to avoid>
Current text: <only the part we are working on now>
Next task: <one clear request>

Keep the handoff short, because everything in it uses space in the new chat. For document work, OpenAI suggests that you paste only the paragraph you want to revise, and add earlier instructions only when you need them.

The summary chat can fill up too. OpenAI's advice for that case is: "If you continued with a summary and hit the limit again, start a separate chat from the sidebar. Send just the question or passage you want to work on."

Should you use a project or memory for long work?

A ChatGPT project keeps related chats and files together, and it can hold its own instructions. This helps with long work, because you stop pasting the same background into every new chat. Put your stable rules in the project instructions and your reference documents in the project files. The number of files you can add depends on your plan, and that article lists the limits.

Project instructions apply only inside the project, and they override your global custom instructions. Project memory can be default or project-only. With project-only memory, OpenAI says: "Your previously saved memories are not referenced in project chats."

OpenAI's project article does not say that a project chat avoids the length limit. Plan to start new chats inside the project as each one fills up.

Memory is useful for short facts that stay true, such as your role or your preferred format. You manage it in Settings > Personalization > Memory. OpenAI's Memory FAQ says "Saved memories are stored separately from chat history" and "Memory features and controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings." Do not use memory as a copy of your chat. If the new chat needs exact wording, paste the exact wording.

Is this the same as the "Chat memory full" message?

Two different things use nearly the same name, so check which one you have.

"Chat memory full" on one conversation. This belongs with the length limit. The Free tier FAQ groups it with "Context window full". In community thread 1402819, an OpenAI support reply from 2 October 2026 told a user that the conversation "has hit its available memory/context limit" and suggested "Continue in a new chat", which should carry over a summary. No OpenAI page opened for this guide says it is the same notice as "maximum length", but the fix is the same: move to a new chat. OpenAI says "You don't need to turn off Memory, delete saved memories, or clear other chats."

"Memory full" for your saved memories. This is an account-level state. OpenAI's release notes from 15 October 2025 describe automatic memory management that is meant to help avoid it. It concerns your saved memories, so you look at it in Settings > Personalization > Memory. It does not explain why one chat stopped taking messages.

Can you export a chat that reached the limit?

OpenAI has not answered this in the sources opened for this guide, so test your own account.

The data export article gives the path: Settings > Data controls > Export data > Confirm export. It says "The downloaded ZIP file includes your chat history and other relevant account data", and that the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. Export is not available in Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. On Edu it depends on your role and workspace settings. The article mentions deleted chats, but it says nothing about chats that reached the length limit.

In thread 1381626, a user wrote on 30 May 2026 that "these chats are also not included in the data export". This is one user report. The OpenAI staff reply in the thread said "the best approach is to open a ticket with the Support", and it gave no ruling on export.

To find out, request the export and search the ZIP file for a phrase from the full chat. If the chat is missing, open a support ticket. The staff reply asked for the conversation link, the exact error message and the approximate date of the export request, so have those ready. Do not delete the chat while you wait, because "An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted."

Why did my chat reach the limit sooner than before?

OpenAI has not given a cause. Users in a thread from September and October 2026 report chats that lock sooner than they used to. On 18 October 2026 an OpenAI support account wrote: "We're looking into whether this is a widespread issue or something account-specific." It asked for case numbers. That reply does not confirm a bug or a change in the limit.

If your chats fill up after very little text, contact support and include a case number if you have one.

How to keep the next chat from filling up too fast

Size is the cause, so these habits all reduce how much text one chat holds:

  • Use one chat for one task, and start a new chat when the task changes.
  • Send the passage you are working on, and leave out the rest of the document.
  • Attach large text as a file. OpenAI's release notes from 25 March 2026 say large pastes become attachments, which helps keep them from "consuming your entire context window."
  • Update your handoff notes at each milestone, so a full chat costs you only a few minutes.

If you also use Claude, it has its own limit messages. See what to do when Claude says you reached a limit.

FAQ

Can I continue the same ChatGPT conversation after it reaches the maximum length?

Only if the notice offers an upgrade. OpenAI's Free tier FAQ says you can choose that option to continue in the same chat. Without it, the chat will not take new messages, so start a new chat. If the notice offers a new chat with a summary, use it, then check that the summary kept your instructions.

Will a full ChatGPT chat reset if I wait?

Do not count on it. OpenAI says the full-chat notice does not give a reset time for the original conversation. The limit applies to that one chat, so you can start a new chat right away and paste in the background you need.

Do I need to delete memories or old chats to fix this?

No. OpenAI says you do not need to turn off Memory, delete saved memories, or clear other chats, because the limit applies to the one conversation. Deleting chats can lose work, so copy what you need from the full chat first.

Can I still read a ChatGPT chat that reached its maximum length?

OpenAI's Free tier FAQ says you can still read earlier messages. Some users on OpenAI's community forum report full chats that open blank, and OpenAI staff there only told them to open a support ticket. Open the chat now and copy what matters. If it will not load, refresh the page or restart the app. A private browser window can also help.
