ChatGPT limit reached: what to do
Blocked by a ChatGPT limit? Find out which allowance ran out, when it comes back and what still works, by plan and by feature, with Codex kept apart from chat.
A ChatGPT limit reached message means one allowance ran out. OpenAI says that reaching an allowance does not by itself mean your account was restricted, and a usage limit does not end your subscription. Your first job is to find which allowance ran out and when it resets, because the fix depends on that.
As of 4 November 2026, chat limits and the Work and Codex allowance are two separate things. OpenAI has announced a change for December that joins them on some plans. This guide describes today's state first. The December section near the end tells you how to spot the new system.
Which ChatGPT limit did you hit?
The OpenAI help pages we checked do not print the exact on-screen wording for each plan, so this guide does not quote any. Use what you were doing when the message appeared.
- A normal text message on Free or Go. Everyday text chats on these plans are unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. So look for a tool limit or a temporary restriction instead.
- A tool. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have limits that are separate from text chat.
- A Thinking level. Thinking levels are the Medium, High and higher settings for harder questions. Their limits depend on your plan. If you reach one, ChatGPT may continue with another available model.
- GPT-6 Pro. This model has a weekly message limit in Chat, even on Pro plans.
- A GPT. On the Free tier, GPT access pauses until the limit resets.
- Work or Codex. Work and Codex are OpenAI's agent tools. They use their own allowance, so a block here says nothing about your chat limits.
- A notice about a temporary restriction. This is a different cause from a plan limit. The section on temporary restrictions below explains it.
When does a ChatGPT limit reset?
There is no single reset time. The Free tier FAQ says ChatGPT shows applicable limits and reset timing in the product. For a model limit, ChatGPT displays the reset time when one is available. For Work and Codex, OpenAI's pricing page gives no fixed schedule and points you to the usage dashboard.
Check these places, in this order:
- The limit message itself, because ChatGPT shows a reset time when it has one.
- Settings → Usage in ChatGPT.
- For Codex, the usage dashboard, or
/statusin the CLI (command line interface).
If your access does not come back after the stated reset time, contact OpenAI Support. Do the same if you think your usage was counted incorrectly. Support can look into a wrong count, but OpenAI says Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits. Asking for an early reset will not help.
What can each plan hit in chat?
The OpenAI help pages we checked print no message counts for Plus or Go. Numbers you see in blog posts or search snippets do not come from those pages, so do not plan around them.
Free
Free includes unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. The model is GPT-5.6 Luna by default. The limits you can reach are on tools: file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis each have their own. Free has no Thinking levels.
The Free tier FAQ also says that upgrading to a paid plan resets rate limits, so an upgrade can bring a tool back before the reset. If you only need a second assistant for the day, what the free plans of Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini each give you may be enough.
Go
Go is a low-cost subscription that builds on Free. It keeps unlimited everyday text chats and raises the caps for image generation, file uploads and data analysis. Those caps are higher, so you can still reach them. Go also has no Thinking levels. For harder questions, select Think, which uses GPT-5.6 Luna.
Plus
Plus costs $20 a month. Check the pricing page for the price in your country. OpenAI says Plus may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand, so the same work may reach a limit on one day and not on another. It tells readers to use the model picker for current access. Plus includes the Medium and High Thinking levels, but not Extra High or Pro. OpenAI's recent Pro changes did not touch Plus: its help page says Plus usage is unchanged.
For the price and what the plan includes, read ChatGPT Plus price and limits.
Pro
Pro is priced at $100, $200 or $500 a month and is billed monthly only. Pro does not mean unlimited GPT-6 Pro. Any unlimited access in Pro is subject to abuse guardrails, and GPT-6 Pro has a weekly limit in Chat. OpenAI's page gives no message counts, so check your own account.
What happens at the limit depends on the tier:
- Pro $200. When you hit the weekly GPT-6 Pro limit, ChatGPT automatically switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium, so you can keep working on a different model.
- Pro $100. GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro share one weekly allowance, so switching between them does not add messages.
If you read about a cut to the Pro $200 allowance, that news is out of date. OpenAI says the reduction announced in its 29 September email is canceled, and anyone on the lower allowance has had it doubled to match.
How are Work and Codex limits different?
Work and Codex share one usage pool. That pool uses Codex's pricing, credits and limits, and it is included in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. Today it is separate from chat, so you can run out of Codex while chat still works, and the reverse.
Plus and Standard Business show estimated local messages per five-hour period, and weekly limits may also apply. OpenAI says these estimates are not fixed message limits. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, but weekly limits still exist, so do not read this as unlimited.
When you hit a Codex limit in the middle of a task, you can finish the current turn, subject to fair use limits. After that, you have these options:
- Add credits. Plus and Pro see an add-credits option at a Codex limit.
- Use an available reset, but only if your account offers one. A full banked reset refreshes your five-hour and weekly Codex windows, and it also changes your weekly reset date.
- Upgrade your plan.
- Wait for the reset time shown in your account.
Speed settings change how fast the allowance drains. Fast mode uses it at 2.5 times the Standard rate. Ultrafast uses it at 8 times the included-usage rate and 6 times the purchased-credit rate. Ultrafast is available only on Pro $500 and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans. If you are near a limit, go back to Standard speed so the rest lasts longer.
For the full setup and how the plans compare, see how Codex works with a ChatGPT subscription.
What to do when a ChatGPT limit is reached
- Switch to another available model. OpenAI says you can do this at a model limit. It does not help on Pro $100 between the two models that share one allowance.
- Keep working in plain text. On Free and Go, a tool limit does not stop everyday text chats.
- Wait for the reset time.
- Upgrade in Settings → My Plan. Check the pricing page for your country first, because prices can differ.
- Buy credits, but only for eligible features. The next paragraph lists them.
- Use the OpenAI API (application programming interface) for a job that must finish today. API billing is separate from ChatGPT plans, so a ChatGPT plan does not pay for it.
- Move the task to another assistant. If that one blocks you too, what to do when Claude says you reached a limit covers the same steps for Claude.
Credits let you keep using eligible features after your included limits run out. They cover Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Do not buy them to get more chat messages, because OpenAI does not list chat messages among the eligible features. Your included usage is used first, then your credit balance. Credits are valid for 12 months from purchase and are generally non-refundable. Buy them under Settings > Usage in ChatGPT, or under Usage & Billing in the Codex app. Credit purchases are currently open to only a limited group of Free and Go users. On Pro $100 or Pro $200, buying credits does not unlock Ultrafast.
Do not borrow a login or buy access to someone else's account to get past a limit. OpenAI's Terms of Use (effective 1 January 2026) say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else. They also forbid circumventing rate limits or restrictions.
If you decide to cancel a plan, cancel on the platform where you subscribed: ChatGPT, Apple or Google Play. You keep access until the current billing period ends, and uninstalling the app does not cancel anything.
Is it a limit or a temporary restriction?
A plan limit means an allowance is used up. A temporary restriction is different. OpenAI uses safeguards to help prevent misuse, and these may occasionally result in a temporary usage restriction. ChatGPT notifies you if this happens.
The difference matters because the plan options above are built for allowances. If ChatGPT told you about a restriction, do not spend money on an upgrade first. Read the notice, and contact Support if access does not return.
What changes in December?
OpenAI's help page says that starting in December, the usage allowance on Plus, Pro and Business will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex. As of 4 November 2026 the page uses the future tense and gives no day, so treat this as an announcement. Separate chat and Codex limits are what apply today. Free and Go are not named in that sentence.
OpenAI describes the new system like this:
- Usage is measured in tokens, the units a model reads and writes. More advanced models and complex tasks generally use more.
- Instant chat will not draw from your usage.
- Settings → Usage shows your combined remaining usage and reset times.
- At a limit, you can wait for the reset, upgrade or buy credits for eligible features.
OpenAI says it expects most users will not wait for resets more often than they do now. To see which system you are on, open Settings → Usage. If it shows one combined figure for ChatGPT and Codex, the new rules apply to you, so read the Work and Codex section as one shared allowance. If it does not, the separate limits in this guide still apply.
FAQ
How long until my ChatGPT limit resets?
There is no fixed period that applies to every limit. The Free tier FAQ says ChatGPT shows the timing in the product, and for model limits ChatGPT displays the reset time when one is available. Check the limit message first, then Settings → Usage. For Codex, check the usage dashboard or run /status in the CLI.
Can OpenAI Support reset my ChatGPT limit?
No. OpenAI says Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits. Contact Support only if you think your usage was counted incorrectly, or if access has not returned after the stated reset time.
Are ChatGPT Free and Go really unlimited?
Only for everyday text chats, and those are subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have separate limits. Go raises the caps for image generation, file uploads and data analysis, but it does not remove them.
Do credits give me more ChatGPT messages?
Credits are for eligible features after your included limits run out: Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. OpenAI does not list chat messages among them, so do not buy credits for that. Credits last 12 months from purchase and are generally non-refundable.
Why did ChatGPT change my model without asking?
You probably reached a limit. If you reach a Thinking limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available model. On Pro $200, reaching the weekly GPT-6 Pro limit switches ChatGPT to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium. Reaching an allowance does not by itself mean your account was restricted, and a model at its limit may stay unavailable until its allowance resets.
