Claude annual vs monthly billing explained
What annual billing on Claude changes, how mid-cycle upgrades are prorated, what a cancellation refunds, and how to get an invoice with your tax ID.
Claude annual vs monthly billing in one screen
Claude annual billing and Claude monthly billing buy the same plan at two different prices. Annual is one charge that covers twelve months, at a lower rate per month. Monthly is a smaller charge that repeats, and you can leave at the end of any month. Annual buys no extra usage and no extra features. It buys a discount, and it asks for the year in advance.
Everything below was checked against Anthropic's published pricing and billing documentation on 29 August 2026. Prices and plan names change, so read every figure here as a figure from that date, not as a promise about next year.
Which plans offer an annual price
The ladder runs Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Annual billing is offered on Pro and on Team seats. Anthropic's own plan comparison lists both Max tiers, 5x and 20x, as monthly subscriptions with no annual option, checked on 29 August 2026. Enterprise is sold by the sales team, so its terms come from a contract and not from a checkout page.
Pick the plan first and the billing period second. What Pro costs and where its usage limits sit decides whether Pro is enough for you, and the gap between Max 5x and Max 20x decides the rest. If a coding bill is what brought you here, what Claude Code costs per month on a subscription answers that directly, because Claude Code runs on these same Pro and Max plans. Still unsure which tier fits, start from what each plan is actually for. Committing to a year of the wrong tier is the expensive mistake here, not choosing the wrong billing period.

]Both columns are US dollars per month at the published list price. The annual column is what the yearly commitment works out to per month. Pro is 20 a month billed monthly and 17 a month billed annually. A Team standard seat moves from 25 to 20, and a Team premium seat from 125 to 100. Anthropic's pricing page states that prices shown do not include applicable tax, so your invoice total is higher than these numbers wherever tax applies to you.
That is fifteen percent off on Pro and twenty percent off on Team seats. Read it as the price of flexibility rather than as a deal. The rate is lower because you are paying for months you have not used yet, and because that money is hard to get back.
What an annual commitment changes, and what it does not
Four things change. The rate per month drops. One charge covers the whole year, so your card sees a large amount once instead of a small amount twelve times. The next billing date moves to one year ahead. The money is committed, because the default rule on paid Claude plans is that payments are non-refundable.
The product does not change. Usage limits, model access and the feature set on an annual Pro plan are the same as on a monthly Pro plan. Annual billing is a payment term, not a higher tier. If your real problem is running out of usage before the window resets, a longer commitment does nothing about it.
Annual plans renew automatically. Put a reminder in your calendar one week before the renewal date, because that renewal is the whole year again in a single charge.
How to switch from monthly to annual
On Pro, open Settings, then Billing. Click "Adjust plan" next to your subscription details, choose the Pro annual plan on the upgrade page, review the price, and confirm the subscription. The switch takes effect right away. Unused time from your monthly subscription is credited to the first annual invoice, and it appears there as its own line item. Your next billing date is set to one year from the day you switched.
On Team, an Owner or Primary Owner opens Organization settings, then Billing, and clicks "Switch to Annual". The confirmation screen shows the total for the upgrade. The annual plan starts immediately, and unused time on the monthly plan is credited the same way.
Anthropic documents the monthly to annual direction. It does not document a switch from annual back to monthly. The route back is to cancel before the annual term renews, use the plan until the paid year ends, then subscribe again on monthly billing. The billing date works the same way: no setting moves it, so the documented answer is to unsubscribe and subscribe again on the date you want.
What happens to the money when you upgrade mid-cycle
An upgrade takes effect immediately, and the charge is prorated. You are billed one full cycle of the new plan, less the value left in the current cycle of the old plan. On a monthly plan that leftover value is counted as days remaining out of the days in that month. On an annual plan it is counted as days remaining out of 365.
Sometimes the leftover value is larger than one cycle of the new plan. That is the normal case when you move from annual Pro to Max in month two. The difference does not go back to your card. It is stored as a credit on your account and spent automatically on later invoices, where it shows as an "Applied balance" line. An applied balance means a credit already on the account paid part or all of that invoice, so no new money was taken for that part.
Google Play is the exception. If you subscribed through Google Play, an upgrade charges the full price of the new plan, and the unused value of the old plan is converted into extra days on the new one.
Team seats follow the same logic. Adding a seat or upgrading a seat charges the prorated amount immediately. Removing a seat gives no immediate credit and no refund. The seat stays yours for the rest of the term and can be assigned to someone else, which is why sizing a Team plan for a small business is a decision to make before the annual invoice rather than after it.
What a downgrade or a cancellation actually refunds
Cancelling on the web is Settings, then Billing, then the "Cancel" button. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and paid access continues until that date. On an annual plan that date is the end of the twelve months you paid for, which can be eleven months away. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date, because a renewal that has already been charged becomes a refund question instead of a cancellation.
The refund rule is short. Except where the Consumer Terms of Service say otherwise, or where the law requires it, payments are non-refundable. In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom you may receive a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated for what you have used. Refunds are requested inside the product: open "Get help", send a message, and pick the refund request option. Requesting a refund does not cancel the subscription, so a reader who only asks for the refund is charged again at renewal. A purchase made in the iOS app is refunded by Apple, not by Anthropic, and an open dispute with your bank blocks a refund until it is resolved.
The click paths for both actions are in the guide to cancelling or downgrading a Claude plan.
Why the free months offers in search results are usually not for you
Search for a Claude discount and you will find pages promising free months and coupon codes. The Claude checkout has no coupon field and no public student signup. The one published discount is annual billing.
Real offers do exist, and each one is tied to a channel. Claude for Education is a university-wide agreement, so a student gets access because their institution bought it, and the page for it asks you to contact the education team instead of offering a signup. Claude for Teachers has its own verification path for K-12 teachers. Beyond those, partner bundles and trial credits appear from time to time inside specific products or regions. None of them is a code you type at checkout, and a page offering you one is selling clicks. If you are not inside one of those programs and the bill is still too high, annual billing or a lower tier is the honest answer, and the ways to spend less per task cover the rest.
Where to get an invoice or a receipt
Invoices live in Settings, then Billing, in the Invoices section, each with a "View" link. Every invoice is also emailed to your billing email address with the subject "Your receipt from Anthropic", so a mailbox search for that phrase is often the fastest way to find an old one.
There are three kinds of document. A subscription invoice is issued when the plan renews, once a month or once a year. A plan change invoice is issued at the moment of a mid-cycle upgrade. A usage credit receipt covers credit purchases and auto-reload, separately from the subscription.
What each line on the invoice means
- Prorated charge: one full cycle of the new plan, less the value left in the old plan's cycle.
- Credit: value from the old plan that exceeded the new charge, kept on the account.
- Applied balance: a credit already on the account, paying part or all of this invoice.
- Tax: calculated from your billing address, which is taken from the address on your payment method.
- Amount due: the invoice total minus any applied balance. This is what the card is charged.
How to put your company name and tax ID on the invoice
Do this before the charge, not after. Open Settings, then Billing, and click "Update" next to your payment method. Enter your tax or VAT ID (value added tax identification number) in the field provided. If the invoice needs a company name that differs from the name on the card, tick "Use a different name on invoices" and put the company name in the "Bill to" field. Save.
The order matters because a paid invoice is final. Once an invoice is paid, its details cannot be edited, and support cannot reissue it. Changes to billing details apply to future billing cycles only. On an annual plan you receive one subscription invoice per year, so a missing tax ID is a gap you live with for twelve months. Open the first annual invoice on the day it arrives and check the "Bill to" name against what your accountant needs.
Where the charge, the tax line and the bank fee appear
Subscriptions bought on the web are paid by credit or debit card, and most subscribers are billed in US dollars wherever they live. The invoice carries the plan amount in dollars and a separate tax line. That tax is calculated from your billing address, which comes from the address on your payment method, and the prices on the pricing page do not include it.
Your bank performs the currency conversion, at its own rate, on the day the charge settles. Many banks add a conversion fee or a cross-border fee on top. Those fees come from the bank and never appear on the Anthropic invoice, so the amount on your statement can be larger than the invoice total. Use the invoice as the accounting document and record the difference as a bank charge. Annual billing concentrates all of this into one event: one conversion, one fee, on a large amount, on a day you did not pick.
Some accounts are invoiced in a currency that no longer matches the current offering for their region. There is no switch for that, so changing the currency means cancelling the plan and buying it again.
Moving billing when the card or the company changes
To change the card, open Settings, then Billing, and click "Update" next to the payment method. The new card becomes the default, and future renewals are charged to it. Add the tax ID and the "Bill to" name in the same form if a company is now the payer. On Team and Enterprise plans billed through sales, addresses are managed in Settings, then Billing, then Billing Addresses.
If the billing address on the invoice must differ from the address on the card, that is a support request, and they ask for documentation: a VAT certificate outside the US, or a business licence or tax ID inside it.
If a renewal is declined, the invoice stays unpaid and paid features stop until a working card clears the charge. A declined renewal is more likely on annual billing, because one large foreign-currency charge is exactly the kind of transaction a card issuer holds. Warn your bank before the renewal date if the amount is unusual for your account.
FAQ
Is annual billing cheaper than monthly billing on Claude?
Yes at list price. On 29 August 2026, Pro is 17 US dollars a month billed annually against 20 billed monthly, and Team seats are twenty percent lower on annual. The plan itself is identical either way, with the same usage limits. The cost of the discount is that you pay twelve months in advance, and paid time is non-refundable outside the cases named in the Consumer Terms of Service and the 14-day window in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom.
Can I switch from annual back to monthly billing?
Anthropic documents the switch from monthly to annual, not the reverse. The practical route is to cancel before the annual term renews, keep using the plan until the paid year ends, then subscribe again on monthly billing. Cancelling does not cut your access short, because it takes effect at the end of the period you already paid for.
What happens to my annual payment if I upgrade to Max in month two?
The upgrade applies immediately and the charge is prorated. You pay one full cycle of Max, less the value remaining in your annual Pro term, counted as days remaining out of 365. When that remaining value is larger than the Max charge, the difference is kept as a credit on your account and used automatically on later invoices, shown as an "Applied balance". The credit is not returned to your card. On Google Play the mechanism differs: you pay the new plan in full and the unused value becomes extra days.
How do I get an invoice with my company name and tax ID?
Open Settings, then Billing, click "Update" next to your payment method, and enter your tax or VAT ID. Tick "Use a different name on invoices" and type the company name into "Bill to". Do this before the renewal date, because paid invoices cannot be edited or reissued and billing detail changes apply only to future cycles. Invoices are then downloaded from Settings, then Billing, and every one is emailed to your billing address with the subject "Your receipt from Anthropic".
Why is my bank statement higher than the Claude invoice?
Most subscribers are billed in US dollars, so your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a conversion fee or a cross-border fee. Those charges come from the bank and are not on the invoice. The invoice also carries a tax line calculated from your billing address, which is taken from the address on your payment method, and the listed prices do not include tax. Reconcile from the invoice, and record the gap as a bank charge.
