Can you change Claude's billing currency?
Claude bills you in the currency offered in your region. To switch, cancel at the end of the term and resubscribe. Web, iOS, Google Play and API rules.
Can you change Claude's billing currency?
You cannot change the billing currency of a Claude subscription that is already running. Anthropic's help center documents one way to change Claude's billing currency. You mark your plan to cancel at the end of the current term, let the term end, and then buy a new Pro or Max plan. The new plan uses the currency, or the currency options, that new subscribers get in your region. No setting converts a live plan from one currency to another.
So the honest short answer to "can I pay Claude in USD (US dollars)?" is this: only if your region is offered USD. The price follows where you are. This guide explains how Claude picks the currency and what changing it involves for each way of paying. It also shows where the extra costs hide. The help center pages quoted here were checked in October 2026.
How Claude chooses your billing currency
You can pay Anthropic for Claude in four ways, and each one sets the currency in its own way:
- A web subscription bought at claude.ai, paid with a credit or debit card.
- A subscription bought inside the Claude app for iOS, which Apple bills.
- A subscription bought inside the Claude app for Android, which Google Play bills.
- Prepaid API (application programming interface) credits bought in the Claude Console, which is a separate product from the chat plans.
For web plans, the help center says the Pro plan is "$20 per month (US), with pricing in your local currency where supported." It also says monthly pricing varies by region. Some regions include tax in the displayed price, and others add it at checkout. To see the price for your region, open claude.ai/upgrade.
The help center does not publish a list of currencies. It also does not say exactly which signal decides your region. It does say what decides your tax: the billing address, which is taken from your payment method's address. For prices by country, see what Claude Pro and Max cost in each country.
Anthropic's wording says "currency (or currency options)". That means some regions are offered more than one currency at checkout. If your region shows a choice, make it carefully at checkout. You cannot change it later without starting a new plan.
Why your currency can differ from what new subscribers pay
Anthropic adds local pricing over time. India is a recent example. In July 2026, Anthropic moved Claude plans in India to rupee pricing, with Pro listed at ₹2,000 per month including GST (goods and services tax).
A subscriber who started a plan before such a change keeps the currency they signed up in. The help center says this directly: "Some subscribers pay their subscriptions using a different currency than the currency (or currencies) new subscribers would be offered in their region." Nothing converts the old plan for you. This is why you can still be billed in dollars after your country gets local pricing.
How to change your Claude subscription currency on the web
These are the steps Anthropic documents. Read all of them before you start, because the order matters.
- Open Settings, then Billing, and note the date your current term ends.
- Mark the plan to cancel at the end of the current term. You keep your paid features until that date. The full cancel flow is in how to cancel or downgrade a Claude plan.
- Wait until the term has ended and the account is back on the free plan.
- Go to claude.ai/upgrade and buy a new Pro or Max plan. The checkout now shows the currency, or currency choices, for new subscribers in your region.
- Open Settings, then Billing, then Invoices, and check the currency on the first new invoice.
The new invoice should show the new currency. If it still shows the old one, the old plan had not ended when you bought the new one. Contact Anthropic support through the help center. Do not buy a second plan.
Step 3 has two practical effects. First, you lose paid access between the end of the old term and the start of the new plan. Choose a day when you can resubscribe right away. Second, an annual plan ends only once a year. If you pay yearly, you must wait for that renewal date. Read how annual and monthly Claude billing differ before you commit to another year.
Compare the two prices before you switch. After conversion, a local price is not always lower than the dollar price. Its advantage is that it stays the same in your own currency. Once you pay in local currency, the amount on your statement no longer changes with the exchange rate.
What changing your card does and does not do
Changing your card does not change your currency. In Settings, then Billing, the "Update" button next to your payment method replaces the card for all future renewals. The plan, and its currency, stay the same.
A new card can change your billing address, though. The address comes from the payment method, and tax is calculated from that address. A card with an address in another country can change the tax on your next invoice, but the currency stays the same. For how tax and VAT (value-added tax) IDs appear on invoices, see Claude subscription invoices and VAT.
Can you pay for Claude in USD from another country?
You can pay in USD only if your region is offered USD. Do not enter a billing address in a country where you do not live to get a different price. The billing address decides your tax, so a false address makes your invoices and your tax records wrong. Anthropic's help center asks for documents, such as a VAT registration certificate, before it accepts a billing address that differs from your card's address. The price follows where you are.
If you want to avoid card fees, the currency is only part of the cost. When a card is charged in a foreign currency, the card network converts the charge at its daily rate. Many banks also add a foreign transaction fee. Those fees, and how to reduce them, are covered in Claude payment methods and FX (foreign exchange) fees.
Also check that Claude sells plans in your country at all. If it does not, no currency setting helps. The list is in where Claude is available, country by country.
How the App Store and Google Play set the currency
If you subscribed inside the Claude app on iOS or Android, Anthropic does not bill you. The help center says payment "is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play." The country or region of your store account sets the price and the currency. Anthropic tells app users to check their app store for the current price in their region.
To change the currency there, you must change your store country. Each store has its own rules.
On Apple, the support page says to "cancel any subscriptions that block a country or region change, then wait until the end of the subscription period." You must also spend any remaining Apple Account balance first. Your Claude subscription is one of the subscriptions that blocks the change.
On Google Play, the help page says "you must be in that location and have a payment method from the new country or region." After you set a Play country, you must wait at least 90 days before you can change it again. A Play balance from the old country cannot be used in the new one.
You can also leave the store and move to a web plan. Cancel the store plan first, because an active app store subscription blocks a web signup on the same account.
What currency does the Claude Console bill API credits in?
The Claude Console is billed separately from Pro and Max. You pay for API usage with prepaid usage credits. Buy them in Settings, then Billing, then "Buy credits". API prices are published in US dollars per million tokens. As of October 2026, the help center documents no local-currency option for self-serve Console credits. If your card uses another currency, your bank converts the charge and the same FX fees apply.
Enterprise plans work in a similar way. Anthropic states that "Self-serve Enterprise plans are billed in USD only." Anthropic tells organizations that need another currency to contact its sales team for a sales-assisted plan. In the help center, this is the only place that says you can ask for a different currency.
FAQ
Can I change my Claude subscription from USD to my local currency?
Not on a running plan. Anthropic's documented method is to mark the plan to cancel at the end of the current term. When the term ends, buy a new Pro or Max plan at claude.ai/upgrade. The new plan uses the currency or currency options offered to new subscribers in your region. To confirm the change, check the currency on the first new invoice in your billing settings.
Why am I still billed in dollars when my country now has local prices?
You subscribed before local pricing reached your region. Anthropic's help center says some subscribers pay in a different currency from the one new subscribers are offered. Existing plans are not converted automatically. To move to the current regional currency, cancel at the end of the term and then resubscribe.
Does updating my card change the currency Claude charges me?
No. A new card replaces the payment method for future renewals, but the plan keeps its currency. The new card can change your billing address, which comes from the payment method, and that address decides the tax on your invoices.
How do I change the currency of a Claude subscription bought on iPhone or Android?
The app store bills that subscription, so the country of your store account sets the currency. Apple requires you to cancel subscriptions that block a region change and wait until the period ends. Google Play requires you to be in the new country with a payment method from that country. After a change, you must wait at least 90 days before the next one.
Can I pay for Claude API credits in a currency other than USD?
As of October 2026, Anthropic's help center documents no local-currency option for self-serve Claude Console credits. API prices are published in US dollars, and your bank converts the charge. Self-serve Enterprise plans are USD only. Anthropic tells organizations that need another currency to contact its sales team.
