What one Claude Max plan actually covers

A Claude Max plan is one subscription tied to one person's account, and it follows that person to every place Claude runs. The same login works on the web, in the desktop app, on the phone apps, and in Claude Code in your terminal. It does not cover a second person, and it does not give you an API key. API means application programming interface, and it is billed on a separate rail that has nothing to do with your monthly subscription.

Everything below describes Anthropic's published plan pages as they stood on 30 August 2026. The Max plan page carries its own warning: "Price and plans are subject to change at Anthropic's discretion." Read the live page before you pay.

Which surfaces one Claude Max subscription reaches

One paid seat covers every product that signs in with that account:

• Claude on the web.
• The Claude desktop app.
• The Claude mobile apps for iOS and Android.
• Claude Code in a terminal, and Claude Code inside supported editors such as VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains IDEs. IDE means integrated development environment.
• Cowork in the desktop app, which runs longer multi-step tasks on your behalf.

The unit is the account, not the machine. You can stay signed in on a laptop and a phone at the same time, and that is still one seat, because Anthropic counts the person who holds the login. Adding a device costs nothing. Adding a person is a second subscription.

Two things people expect to be included are not included. The Claude API and the Claude Console are separate products with their own billing. Anthropic states it directly: "A paid Claude subscription enhances your chat experience but doesn't include access to the Claude API or Console."

Is Claude Code included, or is it a separate purchase?

It is included. Anthropic's documentation says: "With Pro and Max plans, you now have access to both Claude on the web, desktop, and mobile apps and Claude Code in your terminal with one unified subscription." There is no second checkout, and no API key is involved when you sign Claude Code in with your subscription.

The part that surprises people is the shared pool. "Both Pro and Max plans offer usage limits that are shared across Claude and Claude Code, meaning all activity in both tools counts against the same usage limits." A long refactor in the terminal spends the same allowance as your chat window, because there is only one allowance. If chat feels tight on a day you spent in the terminal, that is the reason. Claude Code also runs on Pro at a smaller allowance, so checking what Claude Code access looks like on the Pro plan is worth doing before you assume Max is required. What is the 5x or 20x in the Max tier name a multiple of?

It is a multiple of Pro. Not of the free plan, and not of any fixed message count. Anthropic describes the two tiers this way: "Max 5x provides five times more usage per session than the Pro plan" and "Max 20x provides 20 times more usage per session than the Pro plan."

Two words in that sentence carry the weight. "Usage" is not messages, because a long conversation with large files attached costs far more than a short question. The same plan therefore gives you many light chats or a handful of heavy ones. "Per session" means the comparison is against a window of time, not against a calendar month.

The multiplier is also not the only control in force. Anthropic reserves more: "to manage capacity and ensure fair access to all users, we may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion." So read 5x and 20x as the headline ratio, then take the current windows and caps from Anthropic's own usage pages, which is where they are kept current. The counting rules behind them move much less often than the numbers do, and how the usage windows count your work and when they reset covers those mechanics once so you do not have to re-derive them.

What happens when the ceiling arrives in the middle of a task

In chat, Claude tells you the limit is reached and shows when your window reopens. Nothing is lost. The conversation is still there when you come back.

In Claude Code the interruption costs more, because the thing being interrupted is a running task rather than a message. Claude Code may offer to keep going by buying API credits. That offer moves the work onto the metered rail at standard API rates, and it is not part of your subscription. Anthropic's instruction for staying inside the plan is one line: "Decline the API credit option when presented." Accepting is a real choice with a real invoice behind it, so decide before the prompt appears rather than while a job is half finished. If you meet the ceiling often, read the options once you have already hit the limit on a calm day instead of a blocked one.

Can two people share one Claude Max login?

No. Anthropic's consumer terms are explicit: "You may not share your Account login information, Anthropic API key, or Account credentials with anyone else. You also may not make your Account available to anyone else." A seat belongs to one person.

Set the terms aside and the arrangement still works badly. Two people on one login draw from one allowance, so a large job by one of them leaves the other with nothing, and the second person has no way to see what consumed it. Memory and chat history are shared as well, which means one person's client work is visible to the other. Per-user allowances do not travel either. On the Agent SDK, Anthropic says "Credits are per-user" and "Credits can't be pooled, transferred, or shared across the organization."

What a two-person shop should buy instead

These are the published list prices per person, in US dollars, as of August 2026. Anthropic notes that price and plans change at its discretion, so treat the figures as a snapshot rather than a fixed quote.

Pro sits at 20 a month, Max 5x at 100, and Max 20x at 200. A standard Team seat is 25 per person, and a premium Team seat is 125.

Team seats. The standard seat includes Claude Code. The premium seat is described as "Everything in Standard, plus higher usage limits." Two standard seats cost less per month than a single Max 5x subscription, but each of them also carries less usage than Max 5x, so this is not a way to buy Max cheaply. Metered API keys. You set up Console access and pay for the tokens you use. This is the right rail when the work is automation that runs with nobody watching, and Anthropic says so plainly: "Teams running shared production automation should use Claude Platform with an API key for predictable pay-as-you-go billing."

The two options are shaped differently, which matters more than the headline price. A subscription is a fixed monthly amount with a usage ceiling you cannot cross. API billing has no ceiling until you set a spend limit yourself, and the invoice tracks exactly what you ran. For steady interactive work by a person at a keyboard, the subscription is usually cheaper. Paying from Taiwan or Hong Kong

Prices are listed in US dollars. A card issued in Taiwan or Hong Kong is charged in its local currency at your bank's conversion rate, so the amount printed on your statement moves a little each month even though the US dollar price has not changed. Many local cards add a foreign transaction fee on top, and that fee is in the card's published schedule rather than in anything Anthropic controls. If a predictable local figure matters for your bookkeeping, pick the card that states its fee openly.

Billing period is the other lever you control. Annual billing lowers the per-month figure on the plans that offer it, and it commits you for the year, so it suits someone who has already run a full month at that tier and knows the usage fits. the trade between annual and monthly billing covers what you give up in flexibility. The short version

One Max plan is one person, on every surface Claude runs on, with one shared allowance behind all of them. It is not an API key, and it is not two seats. If a second person needs Claude, buy a second seat. If a machine needs Claude, buy tokens.

Does one Claude Max plan cover more than one person?

No. A Max subscription is one seat for one person. Anthropic's consumer terms say "You may not share your Account login information, Anthropic API key, or Account credentials with anyone else."
