Year 15: SSD Nodes’ Biggest Year Yet

Written by

Abdelhadi Dyouri

15 years ago, our CEO was in college, working a minimum wage job, maxing out credit cards to buy SSDs that the entire industry thought were too expensive to bother with.

The plan was simple. Sell premium servers for way less than anyone else. No investors. No corner-cutting. Just better hardware at prices that didn't make sense to the rest of the industry.

People thought we were nuts.

Turns out, only 25% of businesses make it to year 15. In tech, it's even worse, since over 63% of tech companies don't even survive 5 years. So statistically speaking, we shouldn't be here.

But we are. Still bootstrapped. Still cheaper than the big guys. And year 15 was our biggest year yet.

A Quick Reality Check: What Your VPS Would Have Cost in 2011

Take a look at our new Business VPS: 72GB RAM, 1.8TB NVMe storage, 12 Intel vCPUs. Today, that's $99/month.

In 2011? The SSD storage alone would have cost over $4,300 (enterprise SSDs averaged $2.42 per GB back then). Add ECC RAM, a 12-core Xeon, networking, bandwidth, and redundant power, and you're looking at $15,000+ just to buy the hardware. Renting equivalent infrastructure from Rackspace or early AWS would have run you well over $1,000 a month.

15 years later, you get more power than that for the price of a couple of dinners.

That's not because we got lucky. It's because we kept obsessing over price-to-performance while everyone else got distracted chasing growth metrics.

Still Independent After 15 Years

SSD Prices 15 years ago

Most hosting companies we started alongside have been bought, sold, merged, or flipped to private equity by now. Once that happens, the math changes. Prices go up. Support gets outsourced. The product gets worse.

We never went down that road.

15 years in, we're still the same company. Same philosophy. Same team mentality. The difference is we now have way more servers, way more customers, and way better tools to give them.

We have customers who've been on triennial plans since the early days and are still paying their original locked-in prices today. That's our lifetime price lock in action. Not marketing copy. Actual customers who've never seen a price increase.

Being bootstrapped means we answer to customers, not investors. That's how you end up with lifetime price locks, 3-year plans at 60%+ off, and engineers (not bots) answering support tickets at 3 AM. None of that makes sense on a VC spreadsheet. All of it makes sense if you care about keeping customers happy for 15 years.

What We Shipped This Year

Year 15 was busy. Two major product launches, a new top-tier plan, and a content engine that didn't stop.

Business VPS

Business VPS

In February, we launched our most powerful all-in-one plan ever. The Business VPS packs 12 Intel Silver vCPUs, 72GB RAM, and 1.8TB of NVMe storage. Daily snapshots, on-demand snapshots, firewall groups, API access, IPv4 and IPv6, and priority support all included.

$99/month for everything. Up to 40% off the original price.

This is for teams that can't afford slowdowns. Growing businesses, agencies running production workloads, anyone who needs serious resources without the serious cloud provider bill. Read the full announcement here.

Advanced Firewall Groups

Server security used to mean either leaving ports wide open or learning nftables syntax. Both options are bad.

So we built Firewall Groups. Point, click, done. Set inbound rules, outbound rules, lock down ports, whitelist IPs. All from your dashboard, no SSH required.

$2/month add-on. $10/year on the 3-year plan. Less than half a cup of coffee for proper network security.

96GB Performance Plan

You asked for more headroom, we delivered. Our new top-tier KVM 16X-LARGE plan ships with 96GB RAM, 1.92TB NVMe, 12 Intel Silver vCPUs, and 48TB monthly transfer.

$276/year on our 3-year cycle. That's $1,692 in savings over standard pricing.

Built for teams running multi-tenant environments, heavy databases, AI workloads, and nested virtualization setups that need every gigabyte they can get.

A Massive Content Push

We also doubled down on actually useful content. AI tool tutorials like Claude Code on Ubuntu and OpenClaw setup guides. n8n automation guides for our VPS API. Honest competitor comparisons. DevOps deep dives.

Because hosting decisions should be informed, not guessed.

Behind the Scenes

A lot of year 15 happened where most people don't see it. We expanded our API ecosystem with proper docs and real-world use cases. We refined our snapshot system and made it easier to manage. We invested in our Toronto location for Canadian customers who need data residency. And we kept Vippy humming along, squeezing more performance out of the same hardware.

Not flashy. Just better.

The Numbers After 15 Years

  • 40,000+ virtual machines created
  • Zero outside investment (still bootstrapped)
  • 14 data centers across 6 continents
  • 99.99% uptime with public proof
  • Customers saving up to 90% vs major cloud providers
  • Triennial customers still locked in at their original 2011 prices

What's Next

Year 16 is going to be wild.

AI workloads are exploding. Self-hosting is having a moment. Developers want APIs, automation, and infrastructure they can actually understand. People are tired of paying $500/month for what should cost $30.

We're well positioned for all of it.

The API keeps expanding. More automation hooks, more endpoints, more ways to build on top of our infrastructure. We're looking at new locations where they make sense. And the prices? They stay locked. Forever. Same as they've always been.

Thanks

15 years is a long time in tech. Only 1 in 4 businesses make it this far, and in our industry, the odds are way worse than that.

We're still here because customers chose us. You trusted a small bootstrapped company with your production workloads. You told your friends. You stuck around through pricing experiments, new features, and the occasional 3 AM support ticket.

That means everything.

Here's to year 16. Let's build something good.
